The Libertines were a rock band from London, England, founded by [[Carl Barât]] and Pete Doherty. They released two albums before breaking up in 2004. After the break-up, Pete Doherty became the front man for Babyshambles, while Barât went on to form the band Dirty Pretty Things.

The Libertines' debut, 2003's Up the Bracket, was a commercial hit in England and critically acclaimed by both the English and American music press, although it was called derivative of The Strokes and The Clash. The album was produced by former Clash guitarist Mick Jones. The second album, self-titled and released in 2004, would be the last collaboration to date between Barât and Doherty, and showcased a more mature sound, with subtle elements of The Kinks and The Clash at the forefront.Doherty/Barât Partnership
Like many rock songwriting teams, Doherty and Barât's relationship was defined by tension, both musical and personal. The musical tug-of-war was between Barât's sharp punk-influenced song structures and Doherty's looser, often drug-fueled, poetic ambition. Interpersonal tension, reportedly caused by Doherty's crack and heroin abuse, came to a head during the recording of the second album. Security was reportedly hired for the sessions, in order to keep the pair from fighting.
