  • Background

Though the band emerged from Boston's punk and college-rock scenes in 1987, they're widely remembered for the 1992 breakthrough album, It's a Shame About Ra, containing a hit cover version of Paul Simon's 1967 song "Mrs. Robinson." Dando, who was known to have problems with hard drugs in the mid-'90s, took the band on a lengthy hiatus between 1998 to 2004. A self-titled 2006 comeback album was well-received by critics, but contained an entirely new lineup except for Dando, who remains the band's chief songwriter and vocalist. A deluxe rerelease of It's a Shame About Ray was released in 2008.
