How Battles Work
The new RPG, The Last Remnant, employs a different battle system than most traditional RPGs. Rather than controlling one individual in a party at a time, players will need to group individuals into unions, which can then be controlled. There's a high degree of strategy involved in battle preparation as the members and formation of each union must be decided before the fighting begins.Once the battle has started, the player can choose their level of involvement. They can give their unions vague commands, such as heal or attack, and then the union will decide for itself how best to execute that command. Likewise, players can choose to "Play It By Ear," which allows the union to fully decide for themselves the best course of action based on how the battle is progressing.
Another important element in battles is the morale of the unions. If morale begins to fall, the unions will start doing less damage and may miss more. On the other hand, if morale is good, the unions may gain attack bonuses.IGN: The Last Remnant Preview

The Last Remnant Walkthrough
- After the first intro scene, the game jumps you right into your first battle. This game is credited with a new style of turn based battling.
- First off you have control over multiple individual units called Unions. One by one, you will choose which character to fight with and specify an attack style.
- Each Union attacks together and at once.
-
-
Battle System
- When an enemy shows this icon ... above their head, it means they are unaware of you, and you can sneak up on them. This icon will change as you get closer. To engage the enemy, get close enough and press the engage button, RT.
- If you get close enough to an enemy they will run at you and engage you in battle. If you wish to avoid them, stay as far away as possible.
- The game's new battle system is called the Turnburst command-based system. There are no random battle encounters as seen in many other turn-based battle games.
- The more enemies you take on at once, the more danger you are in, but also the better the reward.
- Press up and down to choose the form of attack.
- Press left and right to choose who to attack.
- The game contains timed sequences where you must press a combination of buttons in the correct order to defeat enemies or to maximize the damage of an attack.
- Another new feature is the morale gauge (the large red/blue bar across the top the screen), which is affected by the events in battle and can change the way your soldiers perform in battle.
- The more moral you have on your side, the stronger your attacks will be. If your moral is low, your defense weakens and you deal less damage.
- Critical Trigger is an opportunity to hit the displayed button for a more critical hit. Pushing the button at just the right moment launches a Critical offense, causing the next unit in your party to act faster than usual.
- Periodically, you can capture a monster. You can either split it with another member of your party, or keep it whole for one individual. Bear in mind, splitting the monster lowers the amount you would receive for it if sold.
- After each battle, all your party members will heal and fully recover.
-
Walkthrough
- Cut Scene #2: You are franticly searching for your sister Irina. She was kidnapped after you received a holographic message from your parents. They are sending someone to bring you to their location. Your search leads you to a battlefield. The ground under you gives way, and you and another warrior fall in. You find yourself in a cave with a warrior named Emma who is very suspicious of you.
- Run to Emma standing by a green object. Once you have opened it, you will obtain your first weapon. The game automatically asks you to equip it afterwards.
- Meet up with Emma ahead and encounter your first battle, using the main character Rush.
- The game gives you instructions on what to press to engage in battle with a nearby enemy.
- Note that you have the advantage when attacking an enemy first. If an enemy engages you first, then you have the disadvantage.
- For battle info, see Battle System.
- After you defeat your enemy, follow the cave path to your next enemy. Practice your battle tactics. After a few turns, your normal attack option will change to a single, selectable attack.
- Select this attack and watch Rush as he does a crazy number on your enemy, killing the beast instantly.
- Follow the cave again to the next opening.
- Cut Scene #3:
- You meet David Nassau, who is the leader of the army you encountered in the battle earlier. David offers to assist you in locating your kidnapped sister. He suggests trying either the Gaslin Caves or the Robelia Ruins.
- TIP: It doesn't matter which you choose first, but the easier of the two is the Gaslin Caves.
- End Chapter One
-
Gaslin Caves
- Blocter joins your party.
- Enemies in the cave are more vulnerable to physical attacks.
- Follow the cave path to a floating green object.
- TIP: Watch out for the scorpions in the cave. They will run up to you fairly quickly, leaving you little time to engage them in battle first. Remember, if they start the battle they have the advantage.
- It's a good idea to save your game at this point. Press Y and scroll down to Save.
- Shortly after you will come to a two way stop. Taking the path to the left will lead you to another item. Go Right and it will lead you to the rest of the mission. Do not worry if you miss the item, after the mission you can still go back and get it.
- TIP: To defeat the slavers, stick to physical attacks. Watch out for Critical Triggers to increase your hit damage.
- Once you defeat the slavers you discover that Irina is not there.
- Go to the floating Transporter (see extra notes).
- Head back to the town of Athlum and to David's throne room.
-
Robelia Ruins
- Pagus joins your party.
- Pagus gives you an Alizarian Ord to enable you to use mystic arts.
- Monsters here are more vulnerable to mystic arts.
- After you open the door, find another item to the right. Be careful, as there are monsters close by.
- Once you come to a large glowing Remnant in front of a door, you will need to find the key.
- Go to the door on the Left. Inside, there is another green treasure box. The key is in the box.
- Once inside the door, there are a few monsters to beat. After, be sure to look to the right for another green treasure box.
- Proceed up the stairs.
- Inside the next room, notice the doors to the left and right.
- TIP: Be careful when entering the left door. There will be creatures waiting to attack you the second you open the door. Hit the engage button to avoid giving them the upper hand.
- The door on the right is another green treasure box.
- It would be a good idea to save your game here. Press Y to do so.
- You must defeat a handful of Anti-Remnant Activists.
- TIP: Keep in mind, if you kill the primary unit or the leader in any battle, you will automatically win without having to fight any remaining units.
- After the battle, you realize Irina isn't here.
- Use the transporter and make your way back to Athlum and to David's throne room.
-
Extra Notes
- Keep an eye out for Green Treasure Chests, these are located in a handful of locations in each area you cover. They are easy to spot.
- After a quest, there will usually be a Floating Transport symbol. They instantly transport you to anywhere you have unlocked on your World Map.
- TIP: Look out of Bubbles highlighted in red that float above people. This means they have something new to say or a quest to accept.
- Press X to check your location on the map.
- Pressing Y allows you to check your equipment, set party members and save your game.
- Your talisman enables your Time shift power. RB engages this power. Use it when enemies are near outside of battles.
- Use your Mystic arts ability enough and you will earn a Mystic Chance. This will either level up an existing Power, or possibly equip a new one.
- Purchase items at town shops to increase either your Attack level, Physical Defense, Mystic Level, or Mystic Defense.
- Some shops in towns sell Equipment to use in battle.
- Eventually, you will be able to take on extra side-quests. These will result in rewards once completed.
-
Dillmoor Quest
- After both missions are completed with no sign of your sister, David suggests traveling to Dillmoor.
- Once on the path to Dillmoor, straight ahead you will find another green treasure chest.
- The are random enemies along the path.
- Go left and follow the path as it bends to the right.
- Follow the path up the hill and keep as close to the right to get the next green treasure chest.
- Go across the bridge.
- To the right and down the hill is the Plateau Door. You need a key, which at this time is unobtainable.
- To the left is the next part of your mission.
- Cut Scene: You and the generals are watching two men standing in front of a Large Remnant Orb. When Rush sees that one of the men has his sister in his arms, he runs out to help her. When the two men see this, one transforms into a Remnant creature with wings and flies away. The other opens some kind of portal and disappears, leaving you to deal with some plant-like creatures.
-
Dillmoor Boss
- The enemies seem to take more damage when you use your mystic power attacks.
- There is a leader in the enemy union who is much larger, but is on standby until you destroy the smaller unions.
- When facing the leader, you cannot see his health meter. Keep using your mystic power attacks and he should fall.
- Be ready to hit A, X, B, Y, or even RT when attacking to maximize your damage.
- Once you defeat the Union Leader. You are automatically taken back to David's throne room with his generals.
- Cut Scene: David and his Generals believe they, including you, should hold back on any further action to plan out a strategy. Rush disagrees and wants to rescue his sister without any delay. He decides to go on alone.
- Now you have the ability to recruit members into your Party. The first place to do so would be the Union of the Golden Chalice, in the part of town closest to Athlum Castle.
- Since your character is not that strong yet, it is a good idea to recruit some backup.
- Once there, speak to the guild officer behind the desk. He will assign a member to your party.
-
Athlum Side Quests
- Go to the Pub in the same part of town. To the right is a women. She is looking for someone to deliver a message to someone she has been separated from. They went to the Robelia Ruins.
- Accept this quest and you will automaticlly be transported to the Robelia Ruins again.
- The one to deliver the message to is right in front of you. Once you do, you will be transported back to Athlum in the pub with the women who gave you the message. She gives you a reward.
- In the same pub a large creature is looking to recruit some help of his own. Accept and the two of you will be transported to the Gaslin Caves again.
- He explains that his employer's child came to the caves to play and never came back.
- He will automatically be added to your party.
- At the end of the cave, you will see the kid and the kidnappers. This is not what you would expect. The kid is one of the large creatures and the kidnappers are the smaller creatures.
- Still, you have a choice to help or not. Remember, completing quests will result in a reward.
- Save the Kid and you will be transported to the Pub again to claim your reward.
- Talk to the Bartender and you will unlock another location on your map, Celapaleis.
-
Celapaleis
- Veer to the right of the road to Stilneys Workshop. Walk up the Craftsman and press X.
- Cut Scene

- Talk to the Craftsman again. He explains he needs some light metal to open his shop. He then says he is off to the Pub.
- TIP: Pubs are always great sources of information.
- Before you make your way to the pub, check out the local shops and their goods. Speak to anyone with an Talk Icon above their head.
- Move on to the Lamberro District. You can recruit allies In the Union of the Golden Chalice. Browse through all available leaders for hire.
- Afterwards, go across the road to the Amber Tavern.
- Inside, near the pubs front door, is the Craftsman you met earlier. Speak with him. He again mentions he is interested in some light metal.
- After, the odd looking creature appears again. He offers to help Rush in acquiring the light metal.
- Select Well, if he REALLY wants to to add Mr. Diggs to your party. This also transports you directly to the Gaslin Caves.
- Now you have unlocked Harvesting Points. In various locations, you will be able to harvest many different styles of items. The Diggs Count on the right side of the screen shows how many time you can use Mr. Diggs.
- TIP: This number resets anytime you revisit an area.
- Proceed up the tunnel, past the Rosefly unions. Look for the sparkle to the right side of the cave. Approach it and press A. Mr. Diggs appears and does his job giving you a unit of light metal.
- You automatically transport back to Amber Tavern to deliver the item to the Craftsman. He gives you 1000G and you have now unlocked the Mr. Diggs category status.
- Talk with other people in the pub to get some general information.
- Speak with the highlighted Celapaleian Soldier across the pub. Admit to him that you are Rush Sykes and he reviles that Lord David wants to talk to you back at the castle.
- TIP: Before you leave Celapaleis, g to any shop and sell all of your captured monsters. Sell enough and you unlock the Flamberge, a powerful long sword. You acquire it at Voreks Armory, but it is not cheap. Equip as Rushs primary weapon.
- Open the city map, select the World Map and select Athlum. Once there, select Athlum Castle.
-
Back in Athlum

- One of the members requests Rush join the party. David gives Rush a new jacket more suited for battle.
- David and Torgals unions join your party. You want to make sure Rushs party is well stocked. Talk with the other generals before leaving the throne room.

-
Battle of Blackdale
- Cut Scene You arrive on the Blackdale field overlooking the enemy, including a large flying Remnant. David orders the invaders to leave, but in response gets an arrow from the sky. You then jump straight to a battle.
- One of Rushs sisters two kidnappers, Jager, is the boss leading the multiple enemy unions including melee, mystic, and many support unions.
- Target the nearest enemy union with Rush and his squad. This sets Davids union to launch into Raidlock against an opposite enemy. Raidlock is a one turn, long distance Deadlock increasing the damage dealt by the raiding union.
- TIP: Focus on Jagers supporting unions first and take advantage of any healing opportunities. This will be the toughest battle you have faced yet so pace yourself.
- Once Jager falls, a large batch of enemy reinforcements arrive.
- TIP: Continue healing Rushs union and since David and the other unions are much stronger, use them to attack the enemy unions.
- Cut Scene Jager struggles to his feet, and then flees. David sends his troops after him. You then end up in an area of Blackdale called The Speckled Chasm.
-
Speckled Chasm
- Move through the area and explore every dead end for treasure chests and harvest points. There are multiple enemy unions throughout this area.
- TIP: You can only use Mr. Diggs 5 times at this point and there are plenty of harvest points in Blackdale. You can reset your Mr. Digg turns by exiting the area and reentering. However if you do, you also reset your Battle Chain to zero. The bigger your Battle Chain, the better loot you acquire from defeated Bosses. You can always return to any area once you complete its mission.
- After a lot of enemy unions, make your way to the southwest to the exit of the pit and catch up with Jager.
- Cut Scene: Jager joins Wagram along with Irina beneath a massive glowing Remnant. Wagram tricks Irina into Binding the Remnant l. Lord David confronts the mage Wagram and demands his surrender and Irinas return but of course they refuse. Rush is not about to watch his sister be taken again and begins to make a move. Then Wagram creates a monstrous Fiery Idol.
-
Fiery Idol Battle
- The Fiery Idol is joined by 5 enemy unions. Deal with them first and then the Idol.
- TIP: Again, use Rushs fellow unions for primary attacks as they are more powerful. Heal Rushs union whenever needed.
- Cut Scene: After you defeat all enemy unions, Wargram threatens to destroy David and his force. Irina disrupts him at the last second causing Blackdales caverns to collapse. Rush and his companions escape and are immediately transported back to Athlum Castle.
-
Athlum & Celapaleis
Cute Scene: David reports on their journey to Blackdale to the Celapaleian emissary, but holds back some information. The emissary departs disappointed. David tells his generals he does not want to revile everything to the Duke just yet. David then comforts a distraught Rush and informs him Irina was spotted alive with the flying Remnant. David also orders Emma to investigate Wagrams connection to the Academy.- The two unions leave you party. Exit the throne room and explore Athlum city. Sell off your captured monsters and check out newly available items. Also available are new side quests.

Build your Unions

- You can hire 10 total to keep in your pool of candidates for your unions. You can also have a total of 10 leaders overall.
- TIP: Advise only forming 2 unions. Keep Rush in the leaders slot of one and add either Togal or Emma as the other. Keeping the unions well balanced is a good idea. Add David and another general in the same union with 2 supporting soldiers. Fill the other slots with remaining hired soldiers.
- TIP 2: Now is a good time to revisit areas using Mr. Diggs to harvest some points. Go anywhere you please that you have already visited.
- TIP 3: Revisit all pubs you can after each story event for new side quests.
The Ivory Peaks
- Make your way south on the road. Enemy unions in the area include King Raptors and Rosefly unions. There are also massive Demons roaming through the area as well.
- Use combat arts against the Raptors and Mystic arts against the Roseflies.
- TIP: If you completed the Dreaming Rose quest given by Baron back in the Celapaleis pub, then you have already visited the Ivory Peaks then and have also already acquired the areas map. If so, then ignore the next step.
- Go south to the lower area of the canyon, turn right and head northwest. Look for the treasure chest to the end of the canyon. Inside is the Ivory Peaks area map.
- Start going south, fighting your way through random Raptors, Demons, and Roseflies. Keep a eye open for treasure chests and harvest points.
- Head east out of the lower canyon, come up to the exit and take it.
- TIP: You will see a shrine-like area with a shimmering wall, this means nothing at this point in the game. If you completed the Dreaming Rose quest earlier then you should recognize it.
- In your world map, Elysion is now an available area.
Elysion
- Cute Scene: Rush looks in amazement at the large citadels of Elysion as well as the great Remnant high above. Pagus explains the history on the Birthplace of the Remnant Culture. You also learn Rush was born here, yet has no memory of the place. David then leads them all to the assembly hall.
- Cute Scene 2: Everyone waits as the Duke of Ghor and the Duke of Qubine have not arrived yet. David suggests to explore the city for information.
- Travel to the Hendler District first and check out all the shops. Sell off your captured monsters and pick up a few recipes at Syvonnes Components.
- Look for the highlighted Mage-Like Girl near the guild entrance. Buy some special Khrynia explosives to complete the quest.
- Check out Elysions pub, The Heavenly Terrace, in Hendler. The bartender will tell you all about nearby cities. Particularly about Barterossa and Royotia. She also explains a bit on the Academy.
- Be sure to speak with the drunk Qsiti by the staircase. H has valuable geographical information. He also warns about the monsters roaming the Southwestern Road to Balterossa. This adds that road to your map.
- Speak with everyone you can in the pub for more information.
- Be sure to also speak with the highlighted Gloomy Man nearby to pick up another side quest, The Secret Letter.
- TIP: Just by arriving in Elysion, you unlock another side quest back in Athlum in the Warriors Honor pub. IF you find yourself back there, speak with the Ambitious Merchant there and acquire the Trade Route which starts in the Gaslin Caves.
- Be sure to fully explore all the areas in the city.
- Speak with the highlighted Warrior Woman in the Genaade District, notice it is the same woman you met on the street back in Celapaleis.
- Visit the Temple of Elysion to hear the lore of Marion Marshall, rumored to have bound the Remnant above Elysion.
- TIP: The nearby Gift Shop has a Elysion katana for sale, a bit expensive but a worth it weapon.
- Visit the Remnant Ark up in the Assembly Plaza on Elysions highest point. Then enter the Academy at the Entrance hall and speak with the highlighted Receptionist.
- Here you meet Haruko, the Academy Director. He tells Rush his parents are working in the Sacred Lands, reachable only by the Ark. However once the Ark is used, it cannot be used again for several months.
- This gives you 2 different choices. You can travel to Tula Street in Elysion to seek out Rushs parents. Or you could continue exploring and do this at a later time.
- Either way, before you leave the Hall, speak with the nearby Enthusiastic Researcher. He talks about how Rushs parents are against the weaponization of Remnants.
- Speak with the Academy Researcher around the corner twice to gain a pair of Visistones. They will then appear in your special items inventory.
- If you havent spoken to the Drunk Qsiti in the Elysion pub, do that now. Then exit to your World Map and head to the new area available, the Southwestern Road.
The Great Sand Sea
- Aside from a few treasure chests and ocational harvest points, all you will find here is sand. However it is a good place to hone your skills against monsters.
- There are a variety of different monsters here, but dont be fooled. All of them are fairly simple to defeat.
- Follow the two lines of old posts called Battered Markers, shown on screen. Follow each of these to an exit leading to the World Map.
- Whichever one you choose, you can go back and choose the other after.
- One Marker leads west to the Vale of the Gods.
- The other leads south to Lavafender.
Vale of the Gods
- Notice the several crabs splashing across the river.
- Tip: Keep the RT button ready as these crabs can suddenly rise and ambush you from the water.
- On the north side of the river is the Letter of Remembrance from the Amnesia quest for Jorgens memory. You can find it tucked between the boulders.
- Be ready for the speedy Divain unions up the river. Expect these Divain unions to be quit more powerful then the ones you have faced before.
- In the cove, you run into a trio of Divain unions.
- Draw one Divain union away and fight that same group separate from the others. Then take on the remaining unions.
- Go west against the flow of the river for a while. Continue keeping an eye out for treasure chests and harvest points.
- Tip: Dont miss the side coves along the way.
- Tip: There is a treasure chest halfway upstream hidden atop a sloped over boulder. It contains the area map.
- Reach the end of the river, exit to the World Map. Select the new area, the western town of Baaluk.
Baaluk
- The warrior Woman, Emmy, is near the entrance of the Union of the Golden Chalice. She speaks of her training.
- Inside the Guild, collect you reward for slaying at least seven crabs. You receive Lotion Formula, allowing Rush to use lotions.
- Exit the Pub and explore the town.
- Tip: The local pub is not necessary to visit. There are no side quests and no information of value.
- In the far end of the town, a Sovani warrior named Wyngale stands guard. He watches over the Remnant Brimuslabus.
- Select the Lords Manor in the City Map.
- You quickly learn that the now dead Lord of Baaluks two sons are in a quarrel over who will take their fathers place.
- Exit to the World Map and Travel to the southern exit of the Great Sand Sea called Lavafender.
Lavafender
- At this time on this visit to Lavafender, you cannot get through the Blazing Doors located around the first corner.
- For now, fight past all enemy unions, and collect all harvest points.
- The first treasure chest, located to the left from the spawn point, contains a Quadrashield. Pick this up.
- Tip: The Blazing Doors can only be unlocked with a special key. This key is obtainable in Royotia after accepting the quest from Marquis. See Into the Abyss.
- After you reach the fork in the road, steer right and take the stairs down to the Depth of the Underworld.
- There is a treasure chest just up the bend containing the areas map.
- Look for a Stoma Morsel buried at an excavation point around the same area (the morsel increases your Diggs count by 1 and maxes your overall count).
- There are a squad of Giants just around the corner and down the tunnel. They are not too much of a chore.
- After defeating the Giants, look for a diving point in the lava flow area at the tunnels end.
- Climb back upstairs to the Path of Anguish, then turn right at the fork in the road. You should be heading south now.
- Reach the end of the Path of Anguish and you return to the World Map. Select the new available location, Royotia.
Royotia
- Go to the Union of the Golden Chalice and speak with the Seasoned Warrior Yama. He tells you of the rare Damascus ore and rumors.
- Go speak with the Fierce Mercenary, he tells you of a southern cave full of historic ruins called Siebenbur. Also home to rumored giant monsters.
- This puts the Fifth path of Siebenbur on the World Map.
- Speak with the Guild Officer and check for available Leaders for Hire.
- Tip: If you hired Caedmon back in Balterossa, you don't need to recruit any more leaders and should be set.

- Speak with the highlighted Royotian soldier who invites you to visit the Marquis Priam at Royotia Castle.

- Ride down into the vast interior chamber of the Sacred Lands.
- Rearrange the huge, pillar like blocks that make up the chamber's surface to open new areas.
- A new kind of teleporters (two glowing orbs) transport you from ledge to ledge.
- Check each transporter as you go along as one holds the Demonblade.
- As you go you can avoid the enemy unions if you like but the more battle experience you get the better.
- The transporter you need to use is guarded by a dragon named Falak.
- Put your unions into a Multi Deadlock with Falak.
- Be ready to heal and cure your unions a few turns.
- Once you beat Falak, use the teleporter.
- When you arrive at the next destination, notice transporter close by. It will take you to the World Map if you are not ready for the battle ahead.
- Tip: If you have any unfinished side quests complete them now before continuing.
- Once ready, follow the final path to the Sacred Lands Door.
- Tip: Save your game here.
- Now you face the Conqueror's 2 servants, Castanea and Roeas.
Boss Battle:
- Throughout this battle, use your most powerful healers who can restore both health and HP.
- Also have one unit per union with the Kiss of Life or Vivification Herb arts to reurect fallen unions right away.
- Keep Castanea Deadlocked if you can and focus all your other unions on Roeas to take her out quickly.
- Once they are both defeated, prepare for the final battle with the Conqueror.
Final Boss Battle
- The Conqueror has many, many arts at his disposal.
- Your numbers allow you to Flank him and use Rear Attacks.
- Be ready to battle other creatures he summons as well such as the Remnant Lob Omen or Namul Niram.
- The Conqueror however cannot summon any Remnants that you have command of at this point.
- Keep your HP high and stay on the Conqueror, be pacient, and you will defeat him.
- Watch the final cut scene and be sure not to miss the small bit at the end of the credits.
The End
