The Last Picture Show is a coming-of-age film about high school students in a small Texas town. Two best friends, played by Timothy Bottoms and Jeff Bridges, discover their youths are coming to a end, corresponding with the closing of the local movie theater.
Critical Reception
The Last Picture Show established Peter Bogdanovich as a successful filmmaker and was selected for the National Film Registry in 1998. Film critic Roger Ebert gave the film four stars in his original review and praises it for encapsulating the themes of change and uncertainty in 1950s America. Though it only won two Academy Awards, The Last Picture Show was nominated in the Supporting Actor (Jeff Bridges) and Actress (Ellen Burstyn) categories, as well as earned nominations for Best Director, Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.
