Written by James Fenimore Cooper in 1826, The Last of the Mohicans is one of five novels in Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales series, which feature Natty Bumppo, a white man who prefers the code of the Indians to his own corrupt society.
The novel is set in 1757 in the province of New York during the French and Indian War, which found France and England battling for supremacy in the New World. It details a Huron massacre of a group of unarmed Anglo-American soldiers. At the center of the story is a pair of kidnapped British sisters who are rescued by Natty Bumppo and the last two Mohican Indians.
The book has been the basis for three feature films of the same name, produced in 1920, 1936 and 1992, as well as three serial versions and a made for television movie.
