The Last Airbender is a live-action movie adaptation of the animated Nickelodeon cartoon The Last Airbender. The film is written, directed and produced by M. Night Shyamalan.
The title of the movie was shortened from The Last Airbender to The Last Airbender to avoid confusion with director James Cameron's upcoming 2009 film Avatar.
On December 10, 2008 the cast for the film was announced. Noah Ringer will star as Aang. Twilight actor Jackson Rathbone will star as Sokka, Aang's friend. Nicola Peltz has been added to the cast to play Katara a Waterbender. Jesse McCartney plays Aang's nemesis ZukuSlash Film: New Cast for "Last Airbender" (December 10, 2008)
Quote
"I was drawn to the series because of its influences: one being Hayao Miyazaki. I've always been a huge fan of Miyazaki's work. He is one of the greatest storytellers in the world and makes anime films in Japan. His combination of spirituality and super natural elements have brought depth and meaning to his art form. In The Last Airbender, I see an opportunity to make a live-action version of a Miyazaki film." —M. Night ShyamalanAnimation Magazine: Shyamalan's Last Airbender Set for 2010 (April 17, 2008)
