The L Word was a television drama about a group of Los Angeles lesbians and their complicated love lives. The women navigated their lives in search of love, success and happiness together. The show dealt with a wide array of topics from monogamy, alcoholism, self mutilation, fallout from a robbery and the U.S. military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy. The show was a featured hit on the Showtime cable television network, and is now available in box set DVDs. Altogether, there were six seasons of The L Word created before Showtime made the decision to cancel the series. However, the much-loved series remains a favorite by many in the LGBT community, mainly due to the fact that it is one of television's first mini-series to ever be devoted to portraying lesbian life.
Since the cancellation of the show, many fans have developed their own theories behind the reasoning for the cancellation, including speculation that Showtime will incorporate The L Word drama into future episodes of Queer As Folk or that the network has plans to bring the series back following an immense protest.
Rumors of a spin off series have circulated during the show's final two seasons, and in the winter of 2008, a pilot was made. According to a statement from the network, the new show follows Alie Pieszecki (played by series regular Leisha Hailey) and her experiences in prison.BandC: ...Details on L Word Spin-off (January 14, 2009)

Little Known Fact
Kit and Bette were not originally cast as sisters. Showtime didn't like Kitt's character when they viewed the pilot but Ilene Chaiken loved a scene where the two women were relating to each other.
