The film tells the story of Amir, a well-to-do boy from the Wazir Akbar Khan District of Kabul, Afghanistan who is tormented by the guilt of abandoning his friend Hassan. The story is set against a backdrop of tumultuous events, from the fall of the monarchy in Afghanistan through the Soviet invasion, the mass exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the Taliban regime.

  • Characters

    • Amir — Protagonist. A well-to-do boy living in Kabul in monarchical Afghanistan who later migrates with his father to Fremont, California following the Russian invasion.
    • Hassan — loyal friend and servant of Amir.
    • Assef — an older teenager from Amir's neighborhood in Kabul.
    • Baba — Amir's father.
    • Ali — Baba's longtime servant.
    • Rahim Khan — Baba's business partner and best friend in Afghanistan, later he was the one who tells Amir about Hassan's actual father.
    • Soraya — an Afghan woman living in Fremont marries Amir.
    • Sohrab — son of Hassan, like his father good at using a slingshot.
    • Farid — driver who is initially abrasive toward Amir but later befriends him.
