  • The King And I is a 1956 musical film adapted from the 1951 Broadway musical of the same name. Both were based on the 1944 book Anna And The King Of Siam.

The plot of the film and stage musical concerns the arrival of British schoolteacher Anna Leonowens in Siam in the early 1860s. Anna was sent as a tutor to the King's children, and in the film, the King and Anna fall in love.

The role of Anna was originally to have been played in the film by Gertrude Lawrence, who originated the role on Broadway. Tragically, Lawrence died of cancer during the show's Broadway run. Both Dinah Shore and Maureen O'Hara were then considered for the role of Anna, but it was Yul Brynner who pushed for the casting of Deborah Kerr. Her singing was dubbed for the film by Marni Nixon.

The film was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won five for Best Actor, Art Direction, Costume Design, Music and Sound Recording.
