The Karate Kid

The Karate Kid is a 1984 martial arts film about a boy named Daniel (Ralph Macchio) who learns the art of karate from his neighbor, Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) in order to defend himself against the members of the brutal Cobra Kai karate school. Over the course of the movie, Daniel learns all he can from Mr. Miyagi before going on to win an important karate tournament against the Cobra Kai. The movie was a commercial smash upon its releasing, helping to jump start the career of Ralph Macchio and earning Pat Morita an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

• 'In November 2008 it was announced that Columbia Pictures, the studio behind the original Karate Kid franchise, will produce a new Karate Kid. The remake will star Jaden Smith, son of actor Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, who recently appeared with his father in The Pursuit of Happyness.
