Based loosely on Victor Hugo's novel of the same name, The Hunchback features darker and more mature themes than most other Disney films do. Additionally, it is the first animated Disney film to use the word "damn,' although it was used in the literal religious sense referring to damnation, not as a curse.
  • Critical Reception

    Although film critics gave the film mixed reviews, fans of the original Victor Hugo novel were up in arms about the liberties the film took with the source material. Nonetheless, the film proved to be a minor commercial success, earning more box-office revenue than various other Disney movies from around the same period of time, including The Little Mermaid and Hercules.
