The Howling is a series of werewolf horror films from the 1980s and 1990s. The original film was directed by Joe Dante, and based on the novel The Howling by Gary Brandner.

Brief Background and Synopsis
The original installment in the series is widely considered to be the best. The film stars Dee Wallace as a TV newswoman (Karen White) who has a near-fatal encounter with a serial killer she is investigating. After police kill the murderer, Karen goes on vacation to recover from her encounter. However, she makes the mistake of going to the very woods where the werewolf gang which spawned the late serial killer dwell. The film is notable for being an early film (along with Star Wars) that featured the makeup artistry of Rick Baker. Six sequels followed.
