The House of the Dead: Overkill is a zombie shooter inspired by the movie Grindhouse and similar 1970s flavored B-movies. Being the fifth title in the main House of the Dead video game series, the developers worked hard to satisfy fans of the series while also revamping the gameplay to give it a fresh feel.

The first House of the Dead game was released in 1996 and the series quickly became popular in arcades. The games were traditionally railroad shooters that automatically steered players through the game as if they were attached to a railroad.
