The House of Mirth was written by Edith Wharton, and its plot follows a young lady's attempt to marry into the upper class of New York City at the turn of the century.

Plot Synopsis

Lily Bart would is the protagonist of the novel. Throughout the plot, she continually sabotages her relationships due to her infatuation with luxury living. In fact, Bart would rather marry for money than for love itself.

Critical Reception

The New York Times positively recieved The House of Mirth upon its publication.
