The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (Film)

  • The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is a science fiction comedy based on the The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. The plot concerns the unwitting adventures of British white collar worker Arthur Dent, who is taken under the wing of Ford Prefect, a humanoid alien, whom Arthur had believed to be a fellow Englishman. The film departs from the novel in several details, while remaining true to its overall tone and plot. Unlike other space adventure comedies, such as Mel Brooks' Spaceballs, Hitchhiker's Guide is no mere parody of the Science Fiction genre, but rather a fully formed, original Sci Fi epic, with a foundation in absurdist humor (especially the work of Monty Python). The film grossed $21 million in its opening weekend in the US, but was not considered an outright box office hit. It was nominated for the UK's Empire Awards in the categories of Best British Film and Best Comedy.
