The Heiress

  • The Heiress, released in 1949 is an Academy Award winning film about a naive young woman whose emotionally absent father prevents her marriage to a suspected fortune hunter. Starring Olivia de Havilland and Montgomery Clift, the film was an adaption of a 1947 play, which was itself an adaptation of Henry James' novel Washington Square. The film has received extensive critical praise, with many commentators applauding director William Wyler's decision to make the selfish motives of Clift's character more subtle than they had been portrayed in the play. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won four.
