The Halo Benders were formed in 1994 by Built to Spill frontman Doug Martsch and Beat Happening frontman Calvin Johnson. Both write songs independently for the band, and perform vocals on most tracks.

Reunion
The band was put on permanent hiatus after the release of The Rebel's Not In in 1998, because of the increasing popularity and time demands on Built to Spill. In March of 2007, Martsch, Johnson, Youtz and Built to Spill drummer Brett Nelson performed two reunion shows at the Visual Arts Collective in Boise, Idaho (Martsch's home town), fueling speculation of a possible new album or tour.
