"The Guns of Navarone not only combines many of the best aspects of the early years of Second World War movies, but it also inspired a new cinematic sub-genre – the misfit group of flawed heroes battling against the odds. As a staging post in cinematic history it's a worthy addition to any collection." - James Clive Matthewshttp://www.productsifter.com/Culture/GreatestWarFilms/The-Guns-of-Navarone-review.aspx

"The film builds the kind of old-fashioned excitement and suspense that today is too often sidestepped for blood, guts, pyrotechnics, profanity, and chases." - John J. • Plot Synopsis

The film opens in 1943. The Germans are losing the war against the Allies and try to lure Turkey, a neutral country, in to the fray. To achieve their goal, they've trapped 2.000 British soldiers on the island of Keros; their only scape route is by sea. The sea route is guarded by two big coastal cannons hidden inside a cliff bunker on the nearby island of Navarone. An air attack over the hard target is not possible, so a team of six commandos, including British and Greek soldiers, is assembled. During the insertion on the island, they lose half their equipment, due to a storm. Later, the team leader, Major Roy Franklin (Anthony Quayle), is injured while climbing the cliff, forcing Captain Keith Mallory (Gregory Peck) to take control of the mission. The film´s suspenseful music, from Russian composer Dimitri Tiomkin, enhances the film's intense atmosphere.
