The Goonies is a 1985 action-adventure film about a group of friends who embark on a journey to find buried treasure in order to save their town from financial ruin.
Story
Mikey Walsh (Sean Astin) and Brandon Walsh (Josh Brolin) are faced with moving from their hometown because of cruel housing developers, until Mikey finds a treasure map in their father's attic. The friends then assemble a ragtag team: Mikey, Brandon, “Mouth” (Corey Feldman), Data (Jonathan Ke Quan), “Chunk” (Jeff Cohen), Andy (Kerri Green) and “Stef” (Martha Plimpton), who all make their way through caves near the Oregon Pacific coast, thwarting the criminal Fratelli mob family and seeking “one-eyed Willie's” buried treasure.
The Goonies Critical Response
While The Goonies received mixed critical response, the film has become an iconic staple of the 1980s. Additionally the film won two awards and received five nominations for the various performances of the young actors. The film is also noted as having started the film career of Sean Astin, who later went on to star as Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings films.
