The Go-Betweens

Categories: Entertainment
  • The Go-Betweens are an indie rock band from Australia marked by jangling guitars, literary lyrics, and alternative instrumentation.
  • Career

Beginning as a rough-edged trio strongly influenced by the Velvet Underground, the Go-Betweens grew to include strongly narrative lyrics, complex instrumentation, and vocal harmonies that placed them in a subset of new wave also occupied by the Smiths, The Birthday Party, and Television. The songwriting team of Forster and McLennan was famously called "the greatest songwriting partnership working today" by The Village Voice, but the band had just one charting hit in thirty years. All the same, they enjoyed a cult following and are a named influence for a number of bands.
