The German Christmas Pickle

  • The German Christmas pickle is a tradition often used on the Christmas holiday. In this tradition, a glass pickle ornament is hidden on the Christmas tree and the first child to find it will receive a gift that will supposedly have a year of good luck.
  • Origins

    • While no one is sure, there are many different stories that claim to be the origin of the German Christmas pickle.
    • One story cites a prisoner-of-war asking for a pickle after his was at death's door due to starvation. A guard took pit on him, giving him a pickle which supposedly renewed his strength and gave him the will to continue living.     • At the Christmas Pickle Festival in Berrien Springs, Michigan, they claim that two Spanish boys were on their way home from boarding school were stuffed into a pickle barrel by a innkeeper.
