  • Plot Synopsis

A Canadian nurse named Hana is caring for a dying burn victim in the field hospital. The patient has no identification and cannot remember his name, therefore he is simply known as The English patient since he has an English accent. The hospital faces an evacuation and, during the transport ,Hana realizes the patient is not stable enough to be moved any further, so she stops at a monastery. The time they spend in the monastery allows for Hana to begin to piece together the patient's life from the small pieces that he can remember. He is actually a Hungarian count that was working on a project in North Africa. A husband and wife join them in the monastery and soon the wife and the patient fall in love, which causes some trouble. They are soon joined by even more people that are all intertwined into the tale.

"Overlong and stifling high-class desert war story that mixes a tearjerker romance with a beguiling mystery story."Dennis Schwartz http://www.sover.net/~ozus/englishpatient.htm

"Among many achievements, John Seal's strikingly precise photography draws contrast, which is significant in the text, between sensual imagery of the adulterous affair between Fiennes and Scott Thomas and jarring images of desert wartime brutality."Emanuel Levy http://www.emanuellevy.com/search/details.cfm?id=3005

"Yes, it's beautifully shot, well-acted, and rich with history lessons. But how can we cheer for heroes who sell out their friends and nation for an extramarital affair?"Jeffrey Overstreet http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/english_patient/
