The Electric Company originally aired from 1971-1977 after being created by the Children's Television Workshop. It primarily served as an educational tool analogous to the popular Sesame Street. The next generation of the series first aired on January 23, 2009, on PBS Kids. It is developed by the Sesame Workshop and carries through the original structure of encouraging phonics and overall reading skills.
Song and Dance
In the original series as well as the new generation of the show, songs are often used for educational purposes. Popular singers and celebrities guest star on the show to lead the musical numbers. Aside from the musical aspects, sketch comedy and animations are used throughout the show for phonetic and reading lessons.
