The Electric Company originally aired from 1971-1977 after being created by the Children's Television Workshop. It primarily served as an educational tool analogous to the popular Sesame Street. The next generation of the series first aired on January 23, 2009, on PBS Kids. It is developed by the Sesame Workshop and carries through the original structure of encouraging phonics and overall reading skills.
