The Economist is a weekly US and international news publication owned by The Economist Group and based in London It has been in print since September 1843. As of 2007, its average circulation is over 1.2 million copies a week; about half are sold in North America. Subjects covered include news, economics, politics, science, technology, finance, business, and the arts. Its readers are some of the most important and influential people in business and government. Every two weeks there is an in-depth special report of a particular business issue or geographical region. Every three months, the Technology Quarterly or TQ is published. Articles are often in editorial form and almost never have a byline. It is tradition that the only signed article is on the departure of the tenured author or when a notable person is invited to contribute. Conversely, the special reports, which are series of articles, do carry bylines. The Economist is known for its Big Mac Index. It uses the price of a McDonald's Big Mac in different countries as a measure of the purchasing power of currencies.
