  • Company Profile

Established in 1897, Dow Chemical Company has grown into the second-largest chemical manufacturer in the world, second only to BASF. The company's founder, Herbert Henry Dow, started the company with his method of extracting bromine from prehistoric brine trapped underground. This method of extracting bromine was conducted in Midland, Michigan, where the company is currently headquartered. The company's first landmark achievement came when it used electric current to separate bromides from brine. The production of bromides and other bleaching agents were then sold to Kodak. Following this seminal achievement, the company listed on the NYSE in 1937.
  • DOW During the Recession

On December 8, 2008, the company announced it would close 20 facilities, costing a total of around 5,000 jobs or around 11% of its total workforce. The move comes in response to economic downturns in many developed nations, and about a week after chief rival DuPont announced similar cutbacks.Reuters: Dow Chemical to cut 5,000 jobs (December 8, 2008) Dow's revenue for the last quarter of 2008 was $10.9 billion, down 23% from a year before.
