This page is a fully-written walkthrough for the 2007 horror-themed first-person shooter The Darkness. The game was developed by Starbreeze Studios and released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Game Background
In The Darkness, the player takes control of a young mobster named Jackie Estacado. On his twenty-first birthday, Jackie discovers that he is the host to a creature named "The Darkness." This entity gives Jackie supernatural powers that he can use to unleash wanton destruction upon his enemies. Jackie must learn how to control this entity while he uses it to enact vengeance upon the mobsters that betrayed him. His journey takes Jackie through both modern day New York and a hellish version of World War I. -

General Information
- As its name suggests, the Darkness entity requires shadow to function. Its energy will rapidly decrease in the light and eventually the creature will retreat. Naturally, this means you cannot use any of its abilities. Be sure to eliminate light sources each time you enter a new area. Often you can turn off indoor lights by simply flipping a wall switch (also a good way to remain undetected). You must destroy street lamps and other outdoor lights with your guns or the Demon Arm.
- When you kill an enemy, the game will give you the option of eating their heart. This causes one of the Darkness's heads to shoot out and rip the organ from their body. The Darkness's power increases with the more hearts it eats.
- The game requires you to perform a lot of backtracking between locations. There is no on-screen arrow, as in BioShock, to indicate which direction to travel. The maps are expansive and sometimes confusing. If you stray too far from this walkthrough and become lost, then consult the objectives screen and keep an eye out for in-game maps, signs, and landmarks that may aid you in navigating.
- There are Collectibles strewn about the game's five chapters. These appear as pieces of paper. While in New York, you can unlock extra content (viewable through the game's main menu) by using a pay phone to call the number that appears on each collectible. The Collectibles found in the Otherworld must be mailed on your return to New York via a blue post office box.
- You can also find outfits for the Darklings. These are less common than the Collectibles. They are found inside glass cases throughout the game.
-
Darkness Powers
- Jackie obtains new Darkness powers at specific points in the game. While you will use these powers primarily to dispatch enemies, there are also instances where you will need to use a particular power to clear obstacles and solve puzzles. The Darkness's powers are as follows:
- Darklings: Jackie is able to see Dark Gateways when the Darkness entity is active. These gateways appear as light spots on the ground with tentacles emerging from them. Jackie can use these gateways to summon Darklings. These are hellish minions that assist Jackie in combat and puzzle solving. You can order them to wherever your cross-hair may be pointing (provided they can reach the location). Be careful because prolonged exposure to light will kill them. Consult the section below for additional information on the types of Darklings.
- Dark Shield: The Darkness will automatically block incoming attacks whenever it is active. Jackie will still suffer damage, but he can shrug off the hits more easily.
- Creeping Dark: You control one of the Darkness's eel-like heads as it slithers along the ground. The tentacle has the ability to crawl through small openings and climb walls. The head can kill enemies, destroy lights, open doors, and collect items. When attacking, this ability is best used to sneak up on enemies that are taking cover behind cars, pillars, etc. If it takes damage it will recoil back to Jackie. Be careful when using this ability because it places Jackie in a hypnotized state. An enemy could potentially sneak up and kill Jackie if you aren't careful.
- Demon Arm: The Darkness rapidly shoots out one of its spiked tentacles. Jackie can use the arm to destroy lights and impale enemies. You can also use it to lift and throw heavy objects (cars, dumpsters, etc).
- Darkness Guns: You receive these two guns during your first trip into the Otherworld. The gun on the right is semi-automatic. The left gun shoots a slower but powerful burst of energy. The guns only work when the Darkness is active, which means you can't use them in the light.
- Black Hole: As the name implies, this power creates a swirling black hole that sucks in and kills any enemies in the vicinity. Using it will also deplete all of your Darkness energy, causing the entity to temporarily retreat. The Black Hole is the best way to quickly eliminate groups of enemies.
Darklings
- While Darklings can be useful in certain situations, they not that intelligent and die rather easily. That being said, there is still no reason not to summon one when the opportunity presents itself. Sometimes summoning a particular type of Darkling is required to solve a puzzle and progress in the game.
- Berserker: The first type of Darkling you will encounter. It attacks enemies at close range. Under certain circumstances it will also move objects for Jackie.
- Gunner: This Darkling wears a military helmet and munches on a cigar. It holds a mini-gun that it uses to mow down enemies. Its drawbacks are two-fold: the gunner is slow to ready its weapon and is often inaccurate.
- Kamikaze: This Darkling attacks by blowing itself to smithereens and taking any nearby foes with it. You can also use this ability to open pathways to new areas.
- Lightkiller: This imp will follow Jackie and destroy any lights it sees. It can also kill enemies with bolts of electricity. The Lightkiller is probably the best of the lot since it combines the quickness of the Berserker with a rather quick and effective ranged attack.
Grave's End Construction Site
- Try shooting at the construction workers in the opening driving scene. If you kill about half a dozen you will receive the Roadkill Achievement. This achievement is hard to get and you may need to restart the game on Easy difficulty to acquire it. You cruise through the area rather quickly, so it may be advantageous to memorize the location of the workers and then restart the sequence. Of course, this is all meaningless to PlayStation 3 owners, unless you simply love the thrill of the kill.
- The car will eventually crash regardless of whether or not you killed any of the workers.
- Walk around to the other side of the car. Help Mikey. Take the guns from him. Your objective is to find Tommy Sullivan. Ask Mikey all available questions until he dies.
- Shoot the lock off the door to your right. Walk through the door.
- Grab Collectible #1 from off the ground in front of you. Jump over the boxes to your right. Follow the hallway to its end. Take the elevator.
- In the next area you will hear two men talking. They are behind the crates ahead of you. Open the gate, walk around to the other side of the crates, and quickly shoot them. Walk through the door behind where they were standing.
- Walk through the next hall and you will emerge outside. Walk up the stairs and perform an execution move on the goon you find at the top. Xbox 360 players will receive the Up Close and Personal Achievement.
- Kill the two men who begin shooting at you. Turn left and enter the construction site.
- Walk through the door to your right. Turn left once you're in the next room. Use the wall as cover and take out the enemies within.
- You will hear a helicopter as you walk further into the room. Turn around and walk back to where you entered the room. A group of armed men will be trying to sneak up on you from behind. Kill them all. If you're lucky you will get them in the hallway where there is little cover. Use the lift at the center of the room. Take it to the top floor.
- NOTE: Jump off the lift onto the first floor it passes. Follow the pathway around to the left. Find Collectible #89 near where the path ends.
- Once you're at the top floor, follow the path around and crawl under the barrier. Stand and keep moving forward.
- The door at the end of the hall will pop open. Kill the enemy that shoots at you from inside. Walk through the room he was in and exit on the left.
- You are outside again. Once you emerge, men will start shooting at you from the window ahead. Take aim and kill them. Jump onto the dumpster and air vents to reach the window. Crawl through it.
- Follow the hallway and enter the first door you see on your left.
- Watch the video message from Uncle Paulie. Open the closet to the right of the desk. It's a bomb! Try to run out of the room. The bomb will explode and blow Jackie outside.
Trinity Cemetery
- When Jackie regains consciousness, the game will give you a new objective: ESCAPE! Kill the men that shoot at you from above. Exit the room.
- Turn left in this next room and walk to the end of the hall. Turn right and exit through the door you see there.
- Turn right and follow the path until you get to the cemetery. Paulie's men will enter the cemetery. Turn right and run to the opposite side of the yard. Walk down the stairs.
- Follow the hallway until it ends at a restroom. Jackie will encounter a man named Frank. Ask him how to get out of the cemetery. He will tell Jackie about the gate at the north end.
- Return the way you came. Don't worry about the men taking shots at you from the windows. As you proceed forward, the Darkness will take over and kill the men. When the cut-scene ends, you will be back in the cemetery.
- Devour the heart from the body in front of you. A Dark Gateway will appear. Follow the on-screen instructions to spawn a Berserker.
- Follow the impish Berserker to the gate. It will move the car blocking the gate. Exit the cemetery.
- Follow the street around to the left. The game will prompt you to use Creeping Dark once you arrive at the small concrete structure at the end of the road.
- Navigate the tentacle through the small opening in the concrete structure. Kill the man inside. You will receive a key to the Trinity Cemetery subway gate. Retract the tentacle.
- Walk down the stairs on your left and open the gate. Walk inside. Xbox 360 players will receive the Happy Birthday Achievement.
Canal Street Subway Station
- Jackie will receive a page from his girlfriend, Jenny. Use the first phone you see to call her. She'll ask you to come to her place. Take note of the directions she gives you -- apartment 11 near the basketball court.
- Pick up Collectible #34 off the ground to the right of the phone. Walk through the turnstiles by using the subway ticket (or you can just jump over them).
- Talk to the man who calls out to you. His name is Enzo. When finished talking proceed forward and turn right to reach the subway platform.
- NOTE: Instead of turning right you can walk to the opposite side of the station, labeled Lower East Side. Turn right at the Information Kiosk to find Collectible #19.
- At the bottom of the stairs, turn right on the subway platform. You can find Collectible #3 in the last hallway.
- NOTE: Collectible #88 can be found on the train tracks. Wait for the train to leave and then jump down onto the tracks to retrieve it.
- Walk to the stairs on the opposite side of the platform. There will be a sign indicating that the stairs lead to Chinatown. Walk up the stairs.
- Keep moving forward to reach the exit to Chinatown. At some point a man named Nick Barruci will flag you down. Talk to him. Ask him about Jenny and he will give you directions to her apartment.
- Exit the subway station to Chinatown.
Chinatown - Jenny
- Enemies will be on the prowl for you. From the top of the stairs, walk forward and grab the Darkling outfit from the glass case ahead. From here, turn left and walk down the alley.
- By this time some enemies will have noticed you. The alley you are in is shaped like an L. Walk forward and take out the light in the middle of the alley. Round the corner and kill any enemies at the end of the alley. There will probably be some enemies taking cover and/or will be out of sight from where you are standing. Use Creeping Dark to sneak up and kill anyone to the right or left of the alley's exit.
- When they're dead, walk forward and exit the alley. Turn right at the basketball court ahead of you.
- Turn left into the alley near the car you see. Walk to the end of the alley and turn left. Walk forward until you hear Jenny calling you. Look to your left and you will see her waving at you from a window. Enter the apartment building.
- Walk upstairs and to apartment 11. Ring the doorbell. Jenny will answer and ask you to come inside.
- Listen to Jenny. Blow out the candles on the cake in the kitchen. Choose whether to tell her the truth or protect her. It doesn't really matter which you choose.
- Follow Jenny to the living room. Read the note from Butcher near the phone. Sit next to Jenny on the couch.
- You can sit here for as long as you wish. Watch To Kill a Mockingbird on the television. Eventually Jackie and Jenny will start to kiss -- tastefully. If you are a proud Xbox 360 owner, then stay at least until you receive the Romantic Achievement.
- NOTE: You can stay and watch the entire movie, To Kill a Mockingbird. It's a great film.
- Get up and use the phone to call Butcher. He'll tell you to meet him at the Olive Grove. Leave the apartment and walk out of the building.
Chinatown - Butcher and Olive Grove
- YouTube: The Darkness - Meet Butcher Joyce (Time: 3:35)
- Retrace your steps back to the basketball court. Follow the street forward, passing the basketball court on your right. You will eventually see a sign for the Olive Grove off to your left. Kill the men standing near it. Enter the alley.
- Turn left at the next opportunity. Kill the two goons you encounter. Jump over the white car and enter the restaurant through the kitchen door.
- Walk forward until you get to the kitchen. There you will meet Butcher.
- Talk to Butcher. Pick up the body. Follow Butcher outside.
- He'll lead you to the white car you saw earlier. Drop the body in the trunk.
- Talk to Butcher. Go through all the dialog options. He will "suggest" that Jackie should take down Dutch Oven Harry's operation to hurt Uncle Paulie.
- YouTube: The Darkness - Saving Chen / To the Green Olive Grove (Time: 3:57)
- Go back inside Olive Grove. Once you get back to the kitchen, enter the closet on your left to find Collectible #6.
- Walk through the kitchen and exit through the double doors.
- You will emerge into the restaurant's dining area. As soon as you do this, Eddie Shrote, a police captain, will begin talking to Jackie from outside via a loudspeaker. Quickly take out all of the lights in the restaurant.
- Shortly thereafter a police van will burst through the wall to your right. A few police officers will jump out and begin attacking. Others will enter the building through the doors immediately in front of where you exited from the kitchen. Retreat back to the kitchen. Pop in and out of cover and take them down with your guns. You can use Creeping Dark, but be sure none of them get the drop on Jackie while you are preoccupied.
- Proceed through the doors ahead. Turn right. You will see a few cop cars and police officers taking shots at you. A helicopter will come into view and begin shooting at you. Take cover behind the nearby dumpster.
- Use Creeping Dark to kill the police taking cover behind the cruisers.
- TIP: A good place to snipe at the cops is from the window inside the building. It's immediately to the right of where the police van crashed through the wall. You won't be able to kill all the cops this way, but you can take out a good percentage of them.
- When all the cops are dead, walk forward to the police cruisers and turn right.
- NOTE: Alternatively, you can turn left at the first police cruiser you come see. Follow the road and turn right. Proceed into the small alley in this square to find Collectible #5.
- Run to the end of the street and turn left. You will see a few cops near a police cruiser. Kill them and run into the alley to the left of the cruiser.
- Take cover in the alley. The helicopter will soon arrive and begin firing at you. Wait for it to go away. Run to the end of the alley and climb the ladder to the right. It's near the mesh fence.
- Walk forward along the fire escape. A police cruiser will pull up below and a few cops will leap out. Shoot them from above.
- Jump to the green container on your right. Collectible #54 is on top of it.
- Jump down to the ground level. Walk straight, past the police cruiser, to the end of the road. You will see a metal fence on your left. Find the opening ahead and to the left. The police will soon open the gate.
- Kill all the cops that emerge from the area and then walk inside. Walk down the steps to the left (underneath the Whitefish Pool sign) to enter Whitefish Pool.
Dutch Oven Harry
- You'll have a temporary reprieve from action until further notice. Walk through the pool hall and out the door labeled EXIT toward the back.
- NOTE: If you have a moment, listen to the two men talking at the back of the pool hall. They are engaged in a funny conversation about moose.
- Follow the hallway outside. You will see Collectible #8 directly ahead of you. Grab it and turn left.
- A man named Matty will approach and ask for money. Ask him about Dutch Over Harry. He will tell you to tell the doorkeeper, "Hit me." Walk down the alley and jump over the dumpster on your right.
- Walk down the steps on the right side of the courtyard. Knock on the door. Select "tell him what he wants to hear" from the dialog options. Walk inside.
- Turn left at the first opportunity and then left again. You will encounter a man named Roach in the room ahead. Ask him about Harry.
- Harry will call Roach and tell him to eliminate you. Kill Roach. Immediately destroy the lights in the room and wait. Some of Roach's men will come in after you. Kill them and then use Creeping Dark to take out the rest of Roach's goons in the building. Most of them will congregate around the central room with the columns that you walked through before.
- NOTE: Instead of telling the guard the password and walking inside, you could have just busted in with guns blazing. However, doing it in this initially passive manner means you won't have to face all of Roach's men at once. Additionally it unlocks the Gandhi Achievement for Xbox 360 owners.
- Grab Collectible #9 near the table where Roach was sitting. Press the intercom button to talk to Harry. Tell him what's going on. He will send more men after you. Kill them the same way you dispatched Roach's guys, with Creeping Dark. Exit the building back out the way you came.
- Walk back up the stairs to the courtyard. There may be a few men here waiting for you. Kill them and any guys shooting at you from the fire escape to the left of the stairs.
- Climb the fire escape. Crawl through the open window you find near the top.
- Stay in the current room. Make some noise. Take out any enemies that come to investigate. Walk through the door ahead and turn left.
- Kill the enemies in the living room ahead. Find Collectible #57 in the kitchen area that juts off from the living room. Walk through the door on the right side of the living room.
- You will emerge into a stairwell. Take the stairs up to the next level. There will be an enemy at the top. Kill him. Turn right from where he was standing. Walk through the door ahead.
- An enemy will be immediately behind the door. Kill him and turn left. Kill any enemy that comes through the passage from the next room. Douse the lights in the area where you are standing. Use Creeping Dark to kill the enemies in the next room.
- Walk inside the room. Turn right and walk up the stairs. Go through the door at the top.
- When the cut-scene is over, you will be back outside. Jump to the train tracks below (beware the train). The Darkness will ask you to feed it. Eat the heart from the nearby body.
- Grab Collectible #59 to your right. Summon a Gunner Darkling from the nearby Dark Gateway (remember that the Darkness must be active for you so see the Gateway). The gunner will derail the train.
- Turn right and proceed down the tracks. Uncle Paulie will page Jackie. The page tells Jackie to call him.
- Jump up to the subway platform. Jenny will page and ask for you to call her. Use the pay phone on the platform to call Jenny. She will tell you that St. Mary's Orphanage is on fire. You need to take the train from Canal Street station to Fulton Street to meet her.
- Now call Paulie. He'll tell you that he was the one who ordered the orphanage burned.
- Take the next train that approaches.
- Turn right and walk along the platform. Follow the signs that point in the direction of St. Mary's Orphanage. Keep following the signs and then walk up the stairs ahead.
- NOTE: Collectible #95 is inside the men's restroom that you pass on your left. It is in the far stall on the left.
- NOTE: Collectible #10 is on the subway tracks (on the opposite tracks from the side with the men's restroom).
- Keep moving ahead as if you are going to exit the station. You will be intercepted by Jenny and Jimmy the Grape. Watch the newscast. When it's over Jackie will begin talking to them. Exhaust all dialog options.
- Follow Jimmy the Grape when he says he wants a word with you. Jimmy will tell you to go to Grinder's Lane and destroy Paulie's money stash.
- Walk back to Jenny. Once everyone is done talking, turn around and walk back down to the subway platform.
- Follow the signs that read Grinder's Lane, to the stairs on the opposite end of the platform. Walk up the stairs and exit to the street.
Grinder's Lane
- YouTube: The Darkness Demo - Grinder's Lane (Time: 9:55)
- Walk up the stairs. You will see a man named Frank Mortis nearby. Talk to him. He will tell you that there is a control box on the other side of the gate that you can use to gain access.
- Keep following the road as it turns to the right. You will see the gate that Mortis mentioned nearby. Use Creeping Dark to crawl over the top of the gate.
- With the Darkness, turn right and destroy the control box you find to the right of the gate. The gate will spring open. Walk inside to the courtyard.
- Kill the enemies in the area. Walk up to the slightly elevated area. Proceed through the doorway that reads Workshop.
- Once inside the Workshop, grab the canister of gasoline off the floor. Take note of the radio (you'll be coming back here later in the game). Walk back outside and through the larger door to the right.
- You are now in a meat storage facility full of butchered hogs. There are no men in the first three rooms. Once you get to the third room, summon a Gunner via the Dark Gateway behind you. Open the door to the fourth room.
- There are several enemies inside. Send the Gunner forward into the room and pick off any enemies you see from a distance with your weapons. Creeping Dark will not be as effective because the room is well lit. Walk into the room and eliminate any stragglers. Exit through the door in the upper left corner of the room.
- There will be a few more enemies inside this next room. It's easiest to just shoot them one at a time. Once you've dealt with them, walk to the back of the room, past the tables, and turn right. You will see a metal door with a small window embedded in it. There is a light shinning through the window.
- The door is locked from the outside. Shoot the three or so men inside the room through the window. Now use Creeping Dark to crawl through the small window and unlock the door from the opposite side. Enter the room.
- You will see piles of cash on the table. Burn the money.
- Exit the room and walk through the door to your immediate right.
- Walk through the locker room into the adjacent cafeteria. Walk to the end of the cafeteria, and take the door to your right.
- Turn left in this new hallway and enter the second door on your right. Collectible #11 is inside this office, behind the desk.
- Exit the office; turn right at the reception desk, and then left when you see the restrooms. Exit through the first door on your left, opposite the restrooms.
- You are now outside near the gate where you first entered the facility. Backtrack to the subway. Walk down the steps.
St. Mary's Orphanage
- YouTube: The Darkness St Mary's Orphanage (Time: 12:10)
- Walk down to the platform, then up the stairs to St. Mary's Orphanage.
- Proceed to where you last saw Jenny. You will find Jimmy the Grape there, alone. He tells Jackie that Paulie and his thugs kidnapped Jenny and took her to St. Mary's Orphanage (what's left of it anyway).
- Walk past Jimmy and exit to the street.
- After you walk up the stairs you will see two enemies ahead of you talking to one another. Use Creeping Dark to sneak up and kill them. Walk up the street and under the archway to your right with the St. Mary's Orphanage sign on it.
- Walk through the courtyard to the building ahead of you. Walk upstairs toward the door. Watch the ghost scene. Walk through the door.
- From the bottom of the stairs, take the door to your right. Walk up the stairs in this next room and go through the door at the top.
- You will emerge into a bombed out section of the orphanage. A ghost boy will run past you. Turn right.
- NOTE: If you want to view more of the story, then turn left in the direction the ghost boy ran. Proceed to the next room and then through the door beyond. You will reach a dead end, but you will be able to view a ghost-scene between young Jackie and Jenny.
- Walk to the end of the room and turn right again. Walk up the stairs. You will come to a landing. Watch the ghost scene. Walk through the door on your left.
- NOTE: On the landing, you can take the door on the right instead. You will come out in another burned section of the orphanage. Jump from the various planks sticking out and make your way to the floored section on the right. There is a door here with Collectible #99 inside.
- After a cut-scene, you will be facing a new room. Enter the room and watch the ghost scene. Take the door to the right of where you entered.
- Walk through the door to your left in this new room. A cut-scene will activate where the Darkness takes over. There is nothing you can do at this point but sit back and watch.
Enemy Trench
- YouTube: The Darkness Inside the Trenches (Time: 3:39)
- NOTE: The game is divided into two areas - present day New York and the Otherworld. The latter is a hellish version of Europe, circa World War I. In the Otherworld all the enemies you face will be German zombie soldiers. You can shoot them with normal weapons, but eventually they will climb back to their feet. The only way to kill them for good is to eat their hearts with the Darkness.
- Jackie is now in a World War I-era trench. Search the area behind you for weapons. Now walk forward into the trench. Kill the soldier in front of you. Xbox 360 players will received the Beginnings Achievement. Eat the soldier's heart to gain the Demon Arm ability. Xbox 360 players will receive the No Man's Land Achievement.
- TIP: Use the Demon Arm to destroy the lights that line the trench.
- Walk forward through the trench. Use the Demon Arm to destroy debris in your path. There will be a room to your left immediately after the debris. Enter and shoot the enemy inside.
- Go back outside to the trench. Keep moving forward. You will come to an alcove on the right with an enemy inside. Kill him and use the binoculars. What is that thing?
- Exit the alcove and keep walking through the trench. When you enter the roofed portion, watch out from above. An enemy will begin shooting at you through the wooden slats. Return fire and keep moving forward.
- Eventually a plane will crash ahead of you. Eat the heart from the body in front of the wreckage to gain the ability to spawn Kamikaze Darklings.
- Summon a Kamikaze from the portal by your feet. He will explode and create a tunnel to the left of the portal. Crouch and enter.
- Crawl through the tunnel until you see soldiers in a room ahead of you. Use Creeping Dark to kill them. Enter the room. Go through the doorway ahead of you.
- Walk forward through the trench. Kill any enemies that cross your path. Eventually the trench leads to the battlefield.
- YouTube: The Darkness Outside the Trenches (Time: 3:45)
Battlefield
- Walk onto the battlefield. Look directly to the right. There will be an enemy shooting at you from the rubble. Run forward and shoot him.
- Keep walking forward and turn left at the third piece of rubble (it looks like Swiss cheese).
- You will see a demon of sorts on top of a hill. This is Pestilence. Don't walk up the hill toward Pestilence because it will damage you. Ignore it and walk around the hill to the wooden walkway ahead.
- Run ahead through the two trees. Kill the soldiers you find here. Move forward along the path to the next tree.
- You will see an airplane fly by. There will be a Dark Gateway in front of you. Summon a Darkling if you wish, then turn left and continue down the path.
- Turn left at the rock ahead. Proceed down the path that is lined with trees. There will be two soldiers near a path to your right. Kill them and keep moving forward to the two trees in the distance.
- You will see a concrete bunker ahead of you. You can't enter it yet. Instead turn right and walk around the machine gun nest (be sure to kill the enemy shooting at you from it). You will find a Dark Gateway at the end of the path. Summon a Kamikaze and he will blow up the door.
- Walk back to the entrance and proceed inside the bunker.
Enemy Bunker
- YouTube: The Darkness Through the Enemy Bunker (Time: 4:36)
- Kill the two soldiers in the first room. Douse the lights. You need to go through the door on the right side of the room, but it is locked.
- See the small hole above the door? Use Creeping Dark to crawl through this hole and behind the wall to unlock the door.
- Walk through the door and kill any soldiers in the hallway. Turn left. You will see a Dark Gateway at the end of the hall.
- Summon a Kamikaze. It will run to the end of the adjacent hallway and blow a hole in the wall.
- Walk through the hole it created.
- You will be back outside. Turn left and walk forward until you see the Union Jack (British flag). Someone will yell for you to come forward. Jump into the British trench.
Village
- YouTube: The Darkness - The Village (Time: 4:17)
- Talk to the first British soldier you see. He tells you to see Corporal Greenwood.
- Walk to the left. A soldier you pass will mention another American in the village. You must find him.
- Talk to the soldiers you find clustered around a hatch. One of them is Corporal Greenwood. Open the hatch and climb down the ladder. Head forward through the hall.
- Keep moving forward until you see a man playing the harmonica. Walk down the stairs and grab Collectible #15 near him. Walk forward into the next hall. Climb the ladder.
- A soldier at the top of the ladder will tell Jackie that someone is waiting for him at the church.
- NOTE: Before proceeding further, turn right and then right again. Collectible #66 is inside the shack ahead.
- Walk forward up the two sets of stairs. Turn right at the wooden door. Walk to where the soldier is standing and turn right. There will be writing on the wall that says "field hospital" where you need to turn.
- Walk down the stairs and turn right at the sign that points in the direction of the field hospital. Walk through the door ahead.
- Talk to the man you find inside. His name is Anthony Estacado. Ask him all possible questions. He will tell Jackie about the Darkness, why it possessed him, and about two weapons that can help Jackie control it. You will receive a new objective to go to the hills and get a pair of weapons from the "man on a cross."
- Leave the field hospital. Walk up the two sets of stairs ahead of you. Turn left at the first bridge you see. Turn right onto the next bridge, labeled "Hills." Cross the bridge and keep moving forward.
- NOTE: Collectible #16 is in the bombed-out house to the right of the first bridge.
- NOTE: Collectible #65 is to the left of the second bridge's entrance. Climb down the ladder to find it.
Hills
- YouTube: The Darkness The Hills (Time: 4:12)
- Turn left and jump to the platform you see on the right. Collectible #87 is on top. Drop down to the room below.
- A large bell is blocking your path. Use the Demon Arm to grab a hold of the bell and move it aside. Walk down the newly revealed hallway.
- At the end of the hall you will experience a ghostly vision. These visions are meant to scare you. They will occur periodically during your time in the Hills.
- You are now facing a field full of dead trees. Walk down the stairs to the ground below.
- See the black stain on the ground, to the left of the bottom of the stairs? Follow it. This next part can be frustrating. It is easy to get lost, but remember all you need to do is keep running forward. The field is filled with a seeming endless number of enemies. Lightening will also temporarily blind you.
- Keep moving forward along the path with the small walls on each side. Use your rifle to shoot any soldiers that are taking shots at you. Don't bother eating their hearts.
- If you keep moving forward, you will eventually encounter Death. He (it?) is hanging from a cross on top of a hill. Talk to him. When he asks the name of hope, select "answer him." You will now receive the Darkness Guns. This unlocks the Hills Achievement for Xbox 360 owners.
- Retrace your steps back to the village. The enemies you encounter along the way should be no problem with the Darkness guns.
- NOTE: There is a trench near the base of the hill that holds Death. You'll run past it on your way to him. Inside the trench is Collectible #80.
Village
- YouTube: The Darkness - The Village Part 2 (Time: 2:17)
- Return to the church.
- Once inside, follow the arrow near the writing that says, "Down here Jackie." Anthony and some other soldiers are below.
- Anthony will tell you about the cannon the Germans are using against them. You need to destroy it. He will also slip a note in your pocket. Check the objective screen to read it.
- Climb the ladder down to the catacombs.
Catacombs
- YouTube: The Darkness Entering The Sewers (Time: 2:39)
- Walk forward. The passage will bend around and eventually reach a point where you must drop down. Drop and walk forward.
- You will emerge into a large room. There are two levels, the one you are on and an upstairs area. Kill the enemies that begin shooting at you.
- Walk forward and turn left. Walk between the two elevated platforms. Climb to the floor above.
- Walk to the hatch ahead. The game will tell you that you have to empty the water chamber to open the door. Turn around and walk up the nearby stairs.
- Kill the enemies upstairs and walk through the door labeled "pump."
- When you open the door, two soldiers will start taking shots at you from the other side of the room. You may not be able to use your Darkness powers because of the lights. Either use your rifle to take them down from afar, or run to the other side and get up close and personal.
- From the entrance of the room, turn and take the door on the left side of the room.
- Proceed to the back of the room and turn the valve when prompted.
- Go back to the previous room and proceed down the hallway on the right. Eventually you will get to another pump room.
- The pump has no power. There is a body to the right of the pump (assuming you are facing it). Walk to the body and eat its heart. You can now summon Lightkiller Darklings. This also unlocks the Darkling Master Achievement. Summon a Lightkiller via the Dark Gateway. It will shock the pump and give it power. Turn the valve.
- Walk all the way back to the door your couldn't open before.
- Turn the valve and the door will open. Walk inside.
- You can go in three different directions. Turn left first and search the room beyond for Collectible #67. Now walk back to where the three paths branch off and take the middle path. Climb up the ladder ahead.
- Take the next passage out of the room. Summon a Lightkiller with the gateway you see leading to the next room. It will take out the lights for you. Walk forward and down the stairs ahead. Keep moving forward into the next hallway. Kill the guards in the room ahead. Climb the ladder.
- Take the door labeled Lagerraum. Keep moving forward, through the next hall and toward the door marked Munitionshasten.

Cannon
- YouTube: The Darkness To the Train (Time: 3:21)
- Walk through the Munitionshasten door and into the Lagerraum door.
- There will be roughly four soldiers in the next room, shooting at you from the platform on the right. Take them out, then run upstairs and eat their hearts.
- Walk up the next set of stairs. Kill the two soldiers at the top. One will be near the top of the stairs and the other will be diagonal from the first one, behind some cover. Walk through the door ahead.
- Once you go outside, a force will knock you back into the room. This is the cannon that Anthony mentioned. Go back outside and run around to the back of the cannon. Kill the three guards and climb the ladder.
- Open the door at the top of the ladder. You are now inside the cannon. Strafe in and out of the room to kill the soldiers to the right of the door.
- Destroy the light to the right of the door. There are quite a few enemies in this room, as well as a great deal of light. You can run in and try to gun them down, but more than likely you will die. The best strategy is to use Creeping Dark.
- With Creeping Dark, crawl along the catwalk to the right and kill any soldiers you see. Remember to eat their hearts or they will re-animate.
- The catwalk will eventually turn to the left. Keep following it until you reach the platform that you can see if you enter the room (its in the upper left corner). Kill any soldiers that congregate here.
- Once all the soldiers are dead, retract the tentacle and walk inside. Press the button on the control panel to the immediate right of the entrance.
- Walk forward along the catwalk into the next room. Follow the catwalk around to the aforementioned platform. Walk up the staircase.
- Follow the catwalk to the right and exit through the door at the end of the hall.
- You are now outside, on the top of the cannon. Walk up the stairs ahead of you.
- Once you're at the top, walk all the way to the end of the walkway and open the hatch you see in the ground. Drop down inside the cannon.
- Once inside a zombie soldier will begin talking to you. Ignore him and walk over to the control panel. Start the engine. The Darkness will say it fixed you. The screen fades to black.

Aunt Sarah
- YouTube: The Darkness Over the River and Through the Woods (Time: 3:40)
- You are now back in present day New York.
- Talk to Jimmy the Grape on the platform. He will tell you to go to Raspberry Street on the Lower East Side and see Aunt Sarah.
- Turn left and walk up the stairs ahead. Walk up the stairs with the sign that reads, "Lower East Side and Trinity Cemetery." You'll see a spectral vision of Anthony at the top of the stairs.
- Turn right and walk up the stairs near the sign that points in the direction of the Lower East Side. Exit to the surface.
- Turn right at the top of the stairs. Walk to the street that runs behind the staircase. This is Raspberry Street.
- Turn left onto Raspberry Street. Walk to the first door on your left (there is a light outside). Ring the doorbell. Aunt Sarah will answer.
- Follow Aunt Sarah to the kitchen. Exhaust all conversation options. She will tell Jackie that he needs to take care of Captain Shrote before he can reach Uncle Paulie. She'll tell you to go to Gun Hill and talk to a man named Abe Hunter. Exit the building.
- NOTE: Collectible #20 is in Aunt Sarah's bedroom. It's near the entrance of her apartment.
- NOTE: There is a blue post office box across the street from Aunt Sarah's apartment. Now is as good a time as any to mail the any letters you collected in Chapter 2. Just walk up to the mailbox and the game will give you the option of mailing them. Doing so unlocks extra content.
- Walk back into the subway.
Gun Hill
- YouTube: The Darkness Gun Hill (Time: 2:37)
- Take the next train you see to Fulton Street Station.
- You should now be at Fulton Street. You need to find the service access on the other side of the subway tracks. The door you are looking for is on the side with the dancers (although it is further down from where they are, near the stairs that lead to St. Mary's Orphanage).
- Make sure there isn't a train coming. Jump across the tracks and walk through the access door.
- Walk through the hallway and up the stairs in the next room until you reach a loading screen.
- Walk through the door ahead and you will be back outside. Welcome to Gun Hill.
- Turn left at the dumpster ahead. Walk through the alley until it dead-ends. There will be a door here marked 47th Street Service Entrance. Walk inside.
- Abe Hunter will be sitting at the bottom of the stairs. Talk to him. Walk to the elevator. Push the button. Walk inside and use the key.
- You will emerge into a hotel hallway. Unlock the door directly ahead of you (you can hear someone singing from inside). Open the door.
- YouTube: The Darkness Chasing Shrote Through His Apartment (Time: 5:09)
- Shrote will be ready for you. He'll fire at you from a room at the end of the hall and then close the door. You can't open it.
- Turn left at the end of the hall and walk into the kitchen.
- NOTE: Collectible #21 is in the living room. It is the room to the left of the kitchen.
- Once you're in the kitchen, turn right into the adjacent hallway. You'll see Shrote fire at you from the end of the hall. He pulls a bookcase down, blocking your path, and then flees.
- Move the bookcase with the Demon Arm. You'll see a set of stairs near the bookcase.
- Run up the stairs and through the door. Proceed through the hall into the next room. Shrote will continue his retreat. Grab the assault rifle from the desk in the room. Continue your pursuit.
- Walk through the hall. You'll see Shrote flee outside. By this time you'll hear a helicopter and other police outside. This helicopter will shoot at you through the window near the door that Shrote used to escape. Return fire.
- You'll hear missiles traveling toward you. Retreat back into the hallway. Missiles will blow a huge hole in the wall. Walk through this hole.
- Once outside, climb the ladder to your right.
- You'll now be on a lower rooftop from where you were before. The Darkness will taunt you about Jenny.
- NOTE: From here, immediately turn right. Walk between the rooftop's structures and the wall to find Collectible #71.
- Jump over the small air duct in front of you. Turn right. Crawl under the pipes ahead. Jump down to the next roof.
- On this next level, jump onto the small air duct that lines the edges. Jump onto the air conditioning unit then again onto the air ducts that align the right-hand wall.
- Walk along the ducts, around the corner of the building. Jump from one outcropping to the next to reach the next series of air ducts.
- Keep walking along the air ducts until you reach another rooftop. Once on the rooftop, take cover behind the building on your left. There are men that will shoot you if you walk out into the open area. They are in a room to the left of where you are standing.
- Edge out from your cover to take out the enemies. Using Creeping Dark is unwieldy at this juncture, so rely on your guns instead. Now run diagonally from your cover to the door you see to right of where the enemies were standing.
- There will be another air duct off to the side and slightly below you. It runs in front of where the enemies were standing. Jump on it and shatter the glass on the right. Enter the room.
- Walk into the adjacent hallway. Continue through the door at the hall's end.
- Turn right once you are inside this new room. You'll see police officers through a window. They are in the adjacent room. Use the element of surprise and try to kill one or two by shooting through the glass before they notice you. You can also retreat to he hallway behind you and use Creeping Dark to take them out. There are roughly four cops to worry about in this area.
- Walk into the room where the cops were sitting. Use the Dark Gateways scattered around the room to call for Darklings if you want them. Walk between the desks and through the door you see at the back of the room.
- Turn left and walk up the stairs. Walk through the door at the top.
- You'll see the helicopter take off with Shrote inside. Run out onto the rooftop. The helicopter will start shooting at you. Someone on the chopper will say, "Get ready for your close-up Estacado, it's gonna be explosive." This means he is about to fire missiles at you. If you're on the rooftop when he fires, you're dead.
- To avoid getting killed, run forward from the door and jump through the opening in the fencing. This activates a cut-scene where Jackie escapes.
- You'll win up back on the ground level. You're in the alley where you first entered Gun Hill.
- Shrote escaped. The game will tell you to visit Butcher and see if he knows how to get Shrote.
- Walk back to the subway. Butcher will page you.
- Once you're back in the subway, use one of the phones to give Butcher a call.
City Hall Station
- YouTube: The Darkness - The Key to City Hall (Time: 3:30)
- Search the men's room in Fulton Street Station (the station you are currently in). Open the first stall to your right. It's marked "out of order." Collect the key from inside.
- From the entrance of the men's room, you can see the stairs that lead to Grinder's Lane. Stay on the subway platform and walk to the left of the stairs. Continue forward and you will see a gate at the end of the path. There is a man standing beside it.
- Talk to the man, his name is Mitch Deval. He'll give you a side-mission to find his brother Eddie at City Hall Station.
- Open the gate. Walk forward until you see the sign pointing in the direction of City Hall Station.
- Cross the tracks to the columns on the other side. Search the columns to find Collectible #96 on the ground.
- Run forward along the tracks, past the City Hall Station sign you saw earlier.
- Walk forward and jump up to the platform above the tracks.
- Walk forward along the platform. You'll eventually see an abandoned subway car up ahead. Turn right and walk up the stairs near the subway car.
- NOTE: Search the subway car to find Collectible #22 and a Darkling outfit.
- Talk to the two hobos at the top of the stairs. They will tell you Shrote closed off the Turkish Baths. Ask all available questions.
- Turn right into the next hallway. One of the bums will mention "Deval's people." Keep moving forward through the hall. Two bums with knives will attack Jackie. Kill them.
- Keep moving forward, killing any enemies that get in your way, until the path dead-ends.
- Look left and you will see a door with a pentagram drawn on it. Try to open the door by standing off to the side. There is a pendulum trap on the other side of the door that activates when you open it. When it's safe, walk through the door.
- NOTE: This next area is full of traps. A good strategy is to use Darklings to spring the traps by ordering them forward. Most of the traps will only spring once, meaning they will kill the Darkling but spare you the damage.
- Walk down the stairs. Stop when you get about halfway. Look up. See the trip wires? Send a Darkling to the bottom of the stairs. It will hit the wires and some objects will fall and probably kill it. You can now safely walk to the bottom of the stairs.
- When you reach the bottom, jump across the large pipes in front of you to find Collectible #72.
- Look right. See how the path extends forward and then turns to the right? Send a Darkling down to the end of the path. It will trigger a blowtorch trap. It's now safe to continue.
- Stop once you round the corner. The water below you is electrified. If you look close you can see the sparking cable that leads from an outlet on the other side of the chasm and rests in the water. Zoom in and shoot the outlet. You can now safely cross the water.
- Spawn more Darklings once you're on the other side of the water. Walk slowly ahead, but be mindful of the trip wire as soon as the path turns to the left. Keep your distance and send a Darkling through to activate the trap.
- Walk down the stairs ahead. Watch out for the falling pipe.
- As you walk down the stairs, you will hear someone ranting about Satan. This is Ernie Deval, the leader of the crazed homeless you've been killing. Don't walk through the door on your right just yet. The door is locked and guarded by trip wires.
- Use Creeping Dark to crawl through the opening above the door. Destroy the lock on other side.
- You can now run through the trip wires. Gas will activate behind you, but with the door open you can run into the next room safely.
Mini-Boss: Ernie Deval
- Try to go through the doorway at the center of the room. A gate will slam shut, barring you from entry. Eddie Deval is behind the gate. He will begin throwing explosives at you.
- YouTube: The Darkness - City Hall Station / Hobo Killing / Black Hole (Time: 4:21)
- Stay toward the back of the room. Blow the padlocks off the gates either to the left or right of the door that closed. When all the locks are gone, the gate will spring open.
- Run forward toward the newly open gate and kill Eddie. Now jump to where Eddie was (you may need to use one of the objects in the room for a boost).
- Eat Eddie's heart to receive the Black Hole ability. Xbox 360 owners will now earn the Crazy for You Achievement.
- NOTE: Find Collectible #81 to the left of the stairs.
- Jump over the chair near where Eddie was standing. Run up the stairs behind it. There will be another gate blocking your exit.
- Activate a Black Hole on the other side of the gate. The suction will lift the gate, allowing you to exit.
- Crawl through the opening. Turn left and follow the path. Kill any enemies you come across. You will eventually see a mesh fence on your left. Jump down through the break in the railing.
- You'll land on a wooden platform. See the pipes running along the left wall? Collectible #73 is resting on a nearby ledge.
- Jump down to the ground below. Follow the corridor and enter through the door you find at the end. Climb the ladder to enter the Turkish Baths.
Turkish Baths
- YouTube: The Darkness To the Turkish Baths (Time: 1:29)
- Walk through the doorway ahead of you. Walk up the flights of stairs until you reach the next floor. Walk down the hallway and turn right. The Darkness will say, "The light grows dim." Walk forward through the room.
- You'll see a pile of junk that blocks the entrance to the next hallway. Remove it with the Demon Arm. Walk through the opening in the debris and turn left.
- Spawn a Kamikaze Darkling from the Dark Gateway in front of you. Turn right and proceed down the next hallway. There will be a brick wall at the end of the hall. Command the Kamikaze to the wall and it will explode, creating a passageway. Walk through this new opening.
- YouTube: The Darkness Turkish Baths Lower Level (Time: 4:29)
- NOTE: Instead of turning right at the Dark Gateway, first turn left. Walk down the hall and turn right into a small room to Collectible #74 inside.
- Walk up the two sets of stairs and through the door at the top.
- Open the door, but don't walk into the next room yet. Stay still. You will hear a beeping sound. Two men will begin talking. Eventually they will notice you. Retreat back to the stairs and take shots at them or use Creeping Dark. Once you've eliminated the men at the ground level (near the empty pool), run inside and kill any enemies shooting at you from the upper level.
- Walk around the pool and into the hallway on the other side of the room.
- Proceed forward until you get to the next room. There will be two enemies inside the room. Take out the first guy you see. The second will take cover to the right of the passageway and try to strafe out and shoot you. Run up and execute him.
- Once you're in this new room, look left. You will see another passageway partially blocked by barrels and other debris. A cop will begin firing at you from this area. Kill him and then move the debris aside. Walk into the hallway near where he was standing.
- As the hall curves around to the left, a number of cops will spot you. Kill any that come close, then retreat, and use Creeping Dark to eliminate the rest. Once they're dead, proceed up the stairs.
- YouTube: The Darkness Turkish Baths Upper Level (Time: 3:34)
- You will now be on the second level, overlooking the abandoned pool where you were earlier. A cop with a machine gun will fire at you from the other side of the room. Return fire. If he takes cover then use the Black Hole on him.
- Walk across the wooden plank to the other side of the room. Go through the passageway you see on this side.
- Walk through the hall until you get to the next room. Some cops will see you. Retreat backwards into the hall and wait for them to come to you before eliminating them. Go back into the room they came from.
- As you walk into the room, a door will open in front of you. A cop with a machine gun will begin to fire. Take cover and strafe in and out to take him down.
- Walk through the door he opened. Turn left and kill the cop at the end of the hall. Walk to where he was and turn left. You will see a door at the end of the hall ahead.
- NOTE: Before walking through the door that the cop opened, you can turn right into another hall. You will come to a shower area. Kill the cop here and walk through the door on the far wall. Open it to reveal a sauna. Grab Collectible #25 from inside.
- Open the door and use Black Hole to kill all the cops inside. Walk into the room.
- The briefcase that Jackie needs is on the left side of this room. Take the briefcase.
- Use Creeping Dark to slither over the top of the mesh cage in the right corner of the room. Grab Collectible #24.
- With a few exceptions, you are going to be backtracking from here until you exit City Hall Station. Exit the room and retrace your steps back to the upper level of the pool area. Along the way you will see a ghostly image of Anthony.
- YouTube: The Darkness SWAT Teams in the Bath (Time: 2:48)
- As you re-enter this area, you will hear the helicopter. Enemies will begin dropping from the roof via cables. Shoot any of them that appear on the second level. Don't proceed too far into the room or the helicopter will shoot you. Use the Black Hole to kill any enemies on the bottom floor.
- NOTE: You can destroy the helicopter with the Black Hole if you time it correctly. This will earn you the Anti-Air Achievement if you're playing on the Xbox 360.
- From where you re-merged on the second floor, turn left and run across the wooden plank to the other side. Run down the stairs ahead.
- Make your way to the first floor of the abandoned pool. Along the way you will encounter at least two cops.
- Stop just before you enter the first level of the pool area. There will be a cop with a machine gun on the second floor to your left. Pop out and use the Black Hole on him.
- Walk into the room and kill any cops that drop down from the helicopter. Run around to the other side of the pool and exit through the doorway. A cop with a shield will try to block you. Use the Demon Arm to rip the shield away and kill him.
- Walk down the stairs to the bottom floor. Watch out because a cop might come from behind and attack.
- Proceed forward through the hallway at the bottom of the stairs. There will be cops at the end of the hall with riot shields. Use Black Hole to wipe them all out at once. Turn right at where they were.
- Turn left again and proceed down the hall ahead. Jump over the debris you crossed before.
- There will be more cops at the far end of the next room. Use the Black Hole to kill them. Walk through the room and turn left. Walk down the stairs.
- Keep walking down the stairs until you get to the ladder you used to first entered Turkish Baths. Climb down to City Hall Station.
Back to City Hall
- YouTube: The Darkness Walking into a Trap (Time: 3:19)
- From the ladder, walk out into the hall ahead. Walk past the scaffolding on your right and turn right at the end of the hall.
- The male hobo you spoke with earlier will enter from a door to your left. He says that the cops are setting up an ambush for you. Walk through the door he came through.
- Walk up the stairs. You will hear cops whispering. Enter the door at the top of the stairs.
- Turn left. You will hear more cops whispering. Turn left at the corner, walk down the hall, and walk up the stairs on your left. Go through the door at the top of the stairs.
- Activate the Darkness if you haven't already. You will see a Dark Gateway at the center of the hallway ahead. As you walk forward, the game will auto-save.
- NOTE: The door to your immediate left is a restroom. Walk into the restroom and talk to the hobo inside. Open the stall on the far right and grab Collectible #23.
- Summon Darklings with the two nearby portals. Walk ahead through the hallway that runs between the two portals.
- There are several cops in the room ahead. A good strategy is to send the Darklings in first to eliminate as many enemies as they can.
- When you enter the room, floodlights will activate to your left. Take cover behind the crates at the center of the room. There will be several cops standing on top of a concrete structure on the left side of the room.
- Strafe in and out of cover and shoot the cops. There are Dark Gateways scattered around the room. Use them if you need more Darklings. Using Creeping Dark is somewhat unwieldy in trying to eliminate the cops at the top of the structure. If you don't want to use your guns, then the Black Hole is a good alternative.
- When all the cops area dead, walk behind the structure. Walk through the door behind it.
- YouTube: Walking into a Trap Part 2 (Time: 3:35)
- There will be cops at the bottom of the stairs. Send some Darklings down the stairs to deal with them before entering.
- You will be in the hallway near City Hall Station where you first encountered the crazy hobos. Turn right from the bottom of the stairs. Follow the hall and turn left.
- You will see a flaming barrel in the middle of the hall. Send Darklings down to the end of the hall to deal with the cops waiting for you around the corner. Walk forward when all the cops are dead.
- Keep moving forward. Eventually you will reach the stairs that lead down to the City Hall Station platform (they lead to the abandoned subway car you passed earlier).
- Send a Darkling to the bottom of the stairs. Cops will kill it. The cops will then flank either side of the passageway below. Activate a Black Hole to kill them. Now walk down to the platform.
- The game will tell you to go to the men's room at Fulton Street Station to meet Butcher. Turn left and walk along the subway platform.
- There will be several cops at the end of the platform blocking your escape. Take cover and use the Black Hole liberally to take them out. When all of them are dead, proceed forward along the tracks back to Fulton Street Station.
Trinity Cemetery
- From the subway tracks, walk up to the walkway on your left. Continue forward until you arrive at Fulton Street Station. Talk to Mitch Deval.
- Walk forward to the station's men's room.
- YouTube: Planting a Bomb (Time: 3:59)
- Butcher is inside the restroom. Talk to him. Let him put a bomb inside the briefcase.
- Exit the restroom. Use the nearby telephone to call Shrote and set up a meeting. Jackie will tell Shrote to meet him at Trinity Cemetery Church.
- Take the next train to Canal Street Station.
- Once you arrive, follow the signs that point you in the direction of Trinity Cemetery. Exit to the surface.
- NOTE: Watch for a vision of Anthony at the top of the stairs.
- NOTE: You will immediately recognize this area. It is the first major area of the game.
- Walk to the cemetery. Enter the church. You'll see another vision of Anthony near the entrance of the church.
- YouTube: Shootout in the Church (Time: 4:23)
- Walk forward until you reach the church's central room. Walk along the path in between the pews.
- Shrote will tell you to put the briefcase on the altar ahead. Run forward and do so. Now turn around.
- It's a trap (big surprise, right?). The cops will douse the lights in the room and begin shooting at you from the columns on either side. Take cover behind the altar and wait for them to fire to give away their position. Zoom in and return fire, preferably with an automatic weapon. Use Black Hole to kill any cops that are grouped together. It's probably NOT a good idea to use Creeping Dark because if you overlook a cop, Jackie is a sitting duck.
- Eventually the cops will activate floodlights. The light will shine horizontally through the center of the room.
- A second wave of cops will appear. Kill any cops on the first floor. Now walk out from behind the altar and run to the columns on either side of the room. Gun down the cops that shoot at you from the church's second level.
- TIP: It's hard to see the cops on the second floor. A good way to spot them is to spawn a Gunner (there are numerous Dark Gateways on the first floor), and send him to the center of the room. The Gunner will detect the cops and begin firing. Observe the direction in which he is shooting, and then draw a bead on his target (more than likely the Gunner won't kill anything himself).
- Once you've killed all the cops, Shrote will throw a flash grenade into the church. The screen will turn white.
Torture Scene
- YouTube: The Second Time I Died (Time: 6:19)
- When Jackie wakes up, he will be tied up in a wooden chair in the middle of the church. Captain Shrote is standing in front of you.
- Watch the cinematic. Ouch!
- When Shrote walks away, talk to the cops to the right of where Jackie is sitting.
- Exhaust the speech options with these two police officers. Eventually the game will allow you to use the Demon Arm.
- Activate the arm. An explosion will rock the church, killing Shrote, the police officers, and Jackie (again).
Path to the Village
- YouTube: The Darkness Canon - Walking to Town (Time: 4:30)
- NOTE: At this point Xbox 360 players will receive the Into the Dark Achievement for completing the second portion of the game.
- You'll return to the Otherworld in the exact same spot you left it (inside the cannon's control room). Try to fire the cannon. It's out of ammo.
- Turn around and climb out the hatch.
- Follow the path forward and climb down to the ground via the ladder at the end of the wooden catwalk that extends from the cannon.
- Listen to the dying soldier at the bottom of the ladder. Turn and walk toward the back of the cannon. See the large rocks ahead of you? Walk to the left of them.
- You will come to a pathway. Walk along the path and kill the soldiers along the way. Destroy the lights as you go and use the Dark Gateways to spawn Darklings.
- Eventually you will reach a flight of stone stairs. Walk up the stairs and kill the soldiers at the top. Walk through the doorway ahead of you.
- Walk through the hall and through the next door. Turn right once you get into the next hallway. Climb the ladder at the end of the hall.
- Turn right at the bottom of the ladder and grab Collectible #78 from the drain with a grate at end. Return to the base of the ladder.
- Walk forward until the loading screen activates.
Village
- YouTube: The Darkness Finding Anthony (Time: 3:08)
- Walk forward through the large pipe until you get to the grate at the end. Grab Collectible #64 off the ground. Punch the grate to knock it off into the water. Jump into the water.
- Follow the stream to the right. You'll walk under two bridges. Exit the water through the passage on your left, past the second bridge. Climb the ladder and you'll be back in the village from Chapter 2.
- Talk to the first soldier you see. His name is Frances Fox. Ask about Anthony. He tells you that Anthony went to the trenches.
- Take the path in between the two soldiers. Walk forward and turn left at the second lantern you see.
- Walk forward until you see a wooden sign pointing you in the direction of the Trenches. Walk down the steps and enter the small hole in the wall with the word "Trenches" written above it. Climb down the ladder.
- You'll end up in the sewer where you first entered the village in Chapter 2. Walk forward until you get to a set of stairs.
- Climb the stairs and talk to a soldier named Charlie Hazelgrove (see the Side-Missions section of this walkthrough).
- Walk past Hazelgrove into the passage to his left. Climb the ladder at the end of the hall to reach the Trenches.
Tank
- YouTube: Tank Ride (Time: 4:2)
- When you emerge, Anthony will yell for you to get into the tank. You need to take this tank to the weapons cache. There you can obtain a shell for the cannon.
- Walk up to the break in the fencing. Climb into the tank's gun turret.
- Anthony drives as Jackie mans the machine gun turret. There isn't much to say about this sequence except to shoot at everything you see (other tanks, airplanes, etc.). Take special care to shoot any enemies that fire at you from the bombed out houses along the left and right of the path.
- NOTE: If you shoot down six planes you will receive the Take a Look at the Sky Achievement. Anthony will tell you the direction the planes are coming in from. Re-start from the last checkpoint if necessary.
- Eventually you will crash through a building and a cut-scene will activate.
Mini-Boss - Demon
- YouTube: Giant Beast (Time: 5:48)
- You are stuck under the tank. Anthony says he will go get help. A large demon creature attacks Anthony and flings him across the room.
- The creature will pick up the tank. The game will now return control to you.
- The demon looks like a cross between the creatures from the Aliens movies and the giant troll from The Lord of the Rings. It will shake the tank from side to side in an effort to kill you.
- The fight is extremely simple. Just keep unloading on its face with the machine gun. Eventually it will die.
Weapons Cache
- Walk past the creature's corpse and turn right. Walk forward until you see Anthony lying on the ground. Listen to what he has to say. Eventually he will fall through a fissure in the ground. DO NOT jump down the hole or you will die.
- From there, walk forward through the passage to the right of where Anthony was laying. Turn right and walk through the door you find.
- Turn left in this new hallway and take the door you see on you left. It's before you get to the gate at the end of the hall.
- Follow the hallway and make your first right. Walk forward and the Darkness will say something about how Jackie will be alone forever. Walk through the door ahead.
- Turn right in this new hall and follow the tracks on the floor until you see a door ahead. Walk through it.
- Walk up the stairs ahead.
- Walk through the door labeled Transport.
- Ahead of you is the cannon shell. It's on a large cart. You need to bring it back to the cannon.
- Walk to the other side of the shell. Soldiers will begin firing at you from the catwalks above the shell. Return fire to kill them. Run up the stairs on the other side of the shell. Eat their hearts so they won't bother you again.
- You should be on a catwalk above the shell. The catwalk is shaped like a T. Turn right to find Collectible #31. Turn around and walk to the other side. Pull the lever you discover here.
- A large door will open on one side of the room. Walk back downstairs to the shell.
- Climb the ladder on the shell. Start the engine.
Shell Ride and Castle Entrance
- YouTube: Loading the Shell (Time 5:51)
- As with the earlier tank ride, you are given control of a mounted machine gun. The cart that holds the shell rides along a track like a roller coaster.
- Shoot the planes that fly toward you. You will ride the rail up to where Jackie left the cannon. Try to shoot the soldiers you see with the machine gun.
- Once you stop, jump off the cart from the front. Turn right and walk around to the right. Climb the ladder back to the top of the cannon.
- Walk to the hatch and re-enter the control room.
- Fire the cannon. The cannon blows a hole in the castle ahead.
- Exit the cannon and walk back to the ground level.
- Walk to the front of the cannon. You will see steps to the left of the Dark Gateway ahead.
- Walk down the steps and follow the path forward. Walk across the bridge that leads to the castle.
- NOTE: See the lights that align either side of this bridge? Check behind the last one on the right to find Collectible #32.
- Walk up the steps and into the hole that the cannon created.
- When you reach the end of this new room, turn left. Grab Collectible #33 from the slightly elevated hole. Now proceed into the hallway on your right.
Boss - The Darkness
- YouTube: Killing the Darkness (Time 3:59)
- Walk down the steps. You will emerge into a large, yet narrow, room.
- There are four staircases in the room. Each leads to an extraction machine. At the far end of the room is an alcove that looks as if it's holding the body of a man.
- Use one of the machines. The Darkness will scream and a little of it will trickle out of Jackie.
- Use the remaining two machines. Finally, use the fourth machine (the second on the left). You will surrender your Darkness guns.
- Run to the center of the room.
- The Darkness will appear in the aforementioned alcove at the end of the room. It looks like a hellish version of Jackie complete with all of the Darkness's abilities.
- The best strategy is to keep your distance. If you walk up too close, the Darkness will hit Jackie with its tentacles. If it spawns a Black Hole, run back to avoid getting sucked inside.
- This fight is really easy if you know what you're doing. Don't shoot the Darkness itself. Instead, only kill the Darklings that it sends after you.
- Once you kill a few Darklings, the Darkness will stop attacking.
- Walk toward it. It will threaten you and tell you to stand back. Choose to "accept him."
- You now control the Darkness. Jackie is warped back to the real world.
Mother of God?
- Jackie wakes up in the courtyard of St. Mary's Orphanage. The game gives you the objective to find out what Shrote meant when he said "Mother of God."
- Walk out to the street.
- Turn left and walk down the street. Enter the subway.
- NOTE: Two individuals are having an amusing conversation about flying cars. You'll pass them on the right as you walk toward the subway.
- Walk down to the subway platform. You'll encounter Vinny Mortarello at the bottom of the stairs. He tells you that Paulie is holed up somewhere. He doesn't know the meaning of "Mother of God." He suggests you ask Butcher.
- Butcher is at Aunt Sarah's apartment on the Lower East Side. Take the next train to Canal Street Station.
- Once you're at Canal Street, take the staircase leading to the Lower East Side. Walk out onto the street.
- Walk to Aunt Sarah's apartment. Ring the doorbell.
- Once inside, talk to both Aunt Sarah and Butcher. Ask about "Mother of God" and ask Butcher for help. He'll tell you about a boat and Paulie's deal. You need to go to Grinder's Lane and find a radio so Jackie can call the boat.
- Walk out of the house and down into the subway.
- Take the first train to Fulton Street Station.
- Exit the station through the Grinder's Lane stairwell. Walk to the surface.
Radio
- YouTube: Getting to the Radio (Time: 3:40)
- You'll recognize this area from Chapter 1. Turn left from the top of the stairs and make your way to the gate.
- At some point enemies will spot you. Walk forward toward the car and kill any nearby enemies.
- Walk up the stairs to the left of the car. Enter the building.
- Once inside, turn right at the reception desk. Walk toward the door at the end of the hall. Enemies will pop out and start shooting at you. Kill them and then exit through the door on the right side of the hall, marked "Cafeteria."
- Walk through the cafeteria and then through the adjacent locker room.
- Quite a few men will be in this next room. Kill them and then walk through the large door on the right side of the room, marked "S1."
- You are now back outside. Walk through the door opposite of where you exited. It's labeled "Workshop."
- Use the radio inside the workshop to call the ship.
- Jackie needs to go to the Lower East Side to meet the boat. Exit the workshop.
- Once you're back in the courtyard, a car will drive through the gate and enemies will hop out. Use the Black Hole to take them out. Walk though the gate they drove through.
- Walk back to the subway station. At some point Butcher will page Jackie and say he has some information. Walk down into the subway.
- Use the first phone you see to call Butcher. He explains that you need to kill the boat's captain.
- Walk to the subway platform and take the next train to Canal Street Station.
- Exit the subway to the Lower East Side. Follow the signs to the surface.
- From the top of the subway stairs, walk to the end of Thompson Street (the street you are currently on). Turn left. Walk down Clark Street until you get to Waterfront Street (first major right). Walk into the tunnel labeled Pier 19.
- NOTE: While on Clark Street, be sure to grab Collectible #7 from under the yellow telephone booth you see about mid-way.
- NOTE: While on Clark Street, a hoodlum might emerge from the alley on your left and try to mug you. Gun him down.
Pier 19
- YouTube: Pier 19 (Time: 4:46)
- When you arrive in this area, you'll be at the bottom of a ramp. You will hear two men talking. They are on the other side of the railing to your right, past the brick building. Sneak behind the brick building, then leap out and shoot them.
- Round the brick building. There will probably be an enemy on the other side of the area, behind some cover. Zoom in and kill him or send Creeping Dark after him. There is also an enemy on top of a bridge in the distance that you need to take out with your weapons.
- NOTE: Collectible #92 is at the end of the alley on the right side of this area.
- Walk down the road that's below the bridge. You'll pass a door with an odd drawing. You will eventually arrive in an open area full of metal shipping containers.
- Walk through the space between the building on your right and the metal shipping containers. Look left and you will see the ship. Approach the ship. Enemies will spot you.
- There is a ramp leading to the ship. First take cover near the large red metal structure on the left. Shoot as many guards and lights as possible. Now walk onto the ship.
Ship
- YouTube: Killing Captain Crunch (Time: 2:32)
- Once you step onto the ship, an alarm will sound. You will be facing a door with a green panel to one side. Turn left.
- Walk along the perimeter of the ship's central structure. Eventually you will get to a staircase on the other side. Walk up the stairs. Kill the enemy in the room at the top.
- Keep following the path forward as it leads outside. You will be at a slightly higher elevation. Turn right down the next hallway. Two enemies will appear at the end of the hall. Kill them and then run up the stairs near where they appeared.
- You will see another set of stairs ahead of you. Walk up the stairs and kill the enemy at the top. Turn left and exit through the door on your right.
- Once you exit, turn left. Kill the men that shoot at you through the doorway. Walk through the doorway to the other side of the area.
- Kill any men that remain in this area. Now walk down the stairs. Open the door at the bottom of the stairs and walk into the control room.
- The captain will be behind the upturned table at the far side of the room. Walk into the room and kill him when he pops out. You can also deliver the final blow by activating a Black Hole toward the back of the room.
- Make your way out of the ship and back to the pier. You will eventually receive a page that says Aunt Sarah is under attack. Leave the ship.
Escape from Pier 19
- YouTube: Escape from Pier 19 (Time: 3:09)
- You're back on the pier. Enemies will show up and take cover among the metal shipping creates. Take cover behind the containers yourself, and eliminate them one at a time.
- TIP: You can also run up the nearby stairs and rain fire on these enemies from above.
- Once the enemies near the containers are dead, run past the black car in the center of the area. Watch out as you pass because there will be a sniper above you. The trunk of the car is facing in the direction of his location.
- Run through the passageway ahead. There will be two black cars with mobsters blocking the end of this wide passage. They are preventing you from getting to the Lower East Side.
- You can snipe these enemies from afar, use Creeping Dark, or just run up and use the Black Hole.
- Approach the cars and kill any enemies that may be hiding to the left or right of the cars. Run past the cars and exit back to the Lower East Side.
Shoot-Out at Aunt Sarah's Place
- YouTube: To Aunt Sarah's Place (Time: 2:22)
- Turn left and proceed down Clark Street. Watch for the car in the alley near the first yellow phone booth you pass. You should be able to see the trunk sticking out. There will be two enemies inside the alley, near the car. Waste them.
- Proceed down Clark Street. Kill any enemies that pop out at the end of the street.
- YouTube: Shootout at Aunt Sarah's (Time: 7:53)
- Turn right onto Thompson. Keep moving forward. You will see men in the distance. They are shooting their guns in the direction of Aunt Sarah's apartment.
- Run forward and kill the men. Take cover if necessary.
- Approach the front of Aunt Sarah's apartment. You will see a car parked there with more enemies nearby. Use Creeping Dark or eliminate them from the distance.
- Enter Sarah's apartment. You will see Jimmy the Grape waving at you. Walk further into the house and more men will begin shooting at you from the outside. Jimmy will throw a bookcase down, covering the front entrance.
- Run into the living room area (second door on your right from where Jimmy the Grape is kneeling). Shoot the goons outside through the windows.
- Move to the kitchen. Aunt Sarah will be inside. Use the window on the right side of the room to shoot the enemies outside. You should be viewing a car near the subway entrance. As you kill enemies, more will run up from the subway. Keep eliminating them until no more emerge.
- Now turn your attention to the car to the left of the subway stairs. Kill all the men around the car. Watch for more that emerge from the nearby alley.
- NOTE: The one-armed man in the bedroom (the room behind Jimmy) will provide you with ammo if you need it.
- Once you kill all the enemies, Butcher will show up in an SUV and run inside. Talk to him. He'll tell you that Paulie is holed up in an old lighthouse. Listen to Jimmy when he starts talking. He offers for you to become the head of the family. Accept or reject his offer. Butcher says that there is a boat waiting for you on Pier 19. It will take you to Paulie.
- Leave the apartment and backtrack to Pier 19. Along the way be sure to collect any ammo that the enemies dropped outside.
Back to Pier 19
- Make your way back to the area where you got on the earlier boat. Several police will be in the area. Don't worry, they won't bother you.
- Turn left at the first police cruiser you see and make your way to the second cruiser near the water.
- Turn left and walk under the red metal structure. Keep walking along the water until a speedboat pulls up on your right.
- Walk to where it docks and tell Mario, the driver, you want to leave.
- YouTube: To the Lighthouse (Time: 2:02)
Pathway to Paulie's Mansion
- YouTube: Fighting Your Way Up the Lighthouse (Time: 4:00)
- From where Mario drops you off, move forward and walk up the stairs ahead.
- The level starts off during the day. However, as you move forward up the stairs, a solar eclipse will shroud the area in darkness.
- Keep moving up the stairs. Kill all the men that attack you. It's best to take cover and take them out from afar. The Black Hole works great for groups.
- NOTE: Make liberal use of the Dark Gateways that line the stairs.
- Keep moving up the flights of stairs until you eventually get to the covered area supported by columns. Kill the enemies at the end of the structure. Walk to the end and turn right.
- Follow this path and turn left. You will see several enemies in the distance. Take them down and then proceed along the path. Eventually you will reach stairs leading to the entrance of the mansion. Walk up the stairs.
- As you walk forward, someone will spot Jackie and turn on a ton of lights. Enemies will pop out. Retreat back down the stairs. Send Darklings forward into the area (there are Dark Gateways on either side of the stairs). Take out the enemies that come to the top of the stairs. There is a seemingly infinite amount of enemies, most of whom come from the mansion's front door. Wait for a break in the action and then run through the front door of the mansion.
- After the cut-scene, walk forward. Another cut-scene will activate. For the next few minutes the game will put you in a different location where you only have to move forward a bit before another cut-scene activates. Each time you will witness the Darkness enacting serious havoc.
- YouTube: In Front of the Mansion (Time: 5:03)
- Eventually you will find yourself at the top of the stairs near the entrance of the mansion. There will be lots of mobsters on the first floor firing up at you. Kill the men and then jump to the first floor.
- YouTube: Through the Mansion (Time: 5:51)
- Proceed down the hallway to the left of the mansion's entrance. Walk forward to the light.
- Another cut-scene will activate. When you regain control, you will be in a study area. Walk through the door to the left of the fireplace.
- You are now back at the mansion's entrance. Walk up the stairs and turn left. Listen to the dying man and then walk through the door that is closest to him.
- Walk through the hallway and jump over the couch at its end. There will be a Dark Gateway here in between two doors. Take either door.
- Walk through the single door at the end of this pair of parallel hallways.
Final Boss - Uncle Paulie
- YouTube: Killing Paulie (Time: 3:51)
- Paulie will begin yelling at you once you enter this area. Run up the spiral staircase in front of you.
- Paulie will continue to taunt you as you move up the stairs. Climb up the first ladder you see.
- Walk through the door on the other side of the central cylinder of this room.
- You are now outside. Walk up the stairs on your right. Open the door at the top of the stairs (it's to your right). DO NOT go inside yet.
- Paulie is inside, to the right of the door. He will begin firing as soon as you are in his line of sight. Strafe back and forth and fire shots at Paulie through the doorway.
- Once he's taken enough damage, he'll fall down to the floor. Walk over to Paulie and kill him.
- Congratulations on beating The Darkness. Xbox 360 players will receive the Anti-Hero Achievement at this point if it's your first time completing the game.
Side-Missions
- The Darkness features a number of side missions. You can find these by interacting with various characters in the game. With a few exceptions (noted below), you will encounter these individuals in the game's two subway stations. You can typically interact with any character whose name appears on the screen. Choose to accept the mission, or help with their problem. The task will now appear on your objectives screen. You reward for completing these tasks is extra content. Additionally Xbox 360 players will receive the Heart of Gold Achievement if they complete all the side-missions.
- These tasks open up gradually as you progress in the game. Generally speaking it is best to complete them in Chapter 5, before you take the boat to Paulie's mansion. All the missions will be available at this point. Nevertheless, noted below is when each mission becomes available.

- The last goon is in Gun Hill. Remember how to get there? Take the service entrance on the other side of the tracks in Fulton Street Station.
- Exit to the surface. Welcome back to Gun Hill. Follow the alley to the left.
