The Plot
In this film, Batman (Christian Bale) teams up with Commissioner Gordan (Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) in order to clean up Gotham and capture all the criminals who escaped Arkham Asylum at the end of Batman Begins. In the process of doing this, a maniacal new villain named The Joker (Heath Ledger) rises to power and pushes Batman to his very limits. Meanwhile, tensions between Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent become strained as they both vie for the love of Dent's coworker, Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal). At some point during the film, it has been confirmed that Harvey Dent will be transformed into the disfigured villain, Two-Face.

On July 20, 2008, Warner Bros. officials said The Dark Knight made $155.34 million in its opening weekend, breaking the opening weekend record set by Spider-Man 3 in 2007.
