  • About Alice Walker

    Alice walker was born on February 9, 1944 in Georgia. She was a good student as a child and earned a full scholarship to attend Spelman College. At Spelman she was inspired by her professor, historian and activist Howard Zinn, to become involved with the Civil Rights Movement. After transferring to Sarah Lawrence College and graduating in 1965 she returned to the south and participated in numerous civil rights campaigns. Walkers first novel, The Third Life of Grange Copeland, was published in 1970 followed by Meridian in 1976. In 1982, she published the famed The Color Purple which won a Pulitzer Prize and was adapted in a popular film.
