  • Plot Summary

    Lonely Italian-American housewife Francesca Johnson (Meryl Streep) is at home on her farm in Iowa while her husband and children attend the state fair. When National Geographic photographer Robert Kinkaid (Clint Eastwood) stops in and asks for directions, she agrees to take him on a tour of the bridges in her home county. The two fall in love and engage in a passionate love affair that lasts only four days. Francesca writes about the affair and how the experience changed her life in a series of journals which her children find after her death.
