    Bridge on the River Kwai was all but unanimously well-received by critics and movie-goers in 1957, and was appropriately rewarded with eight Academy Award nominations. The film won all but one. Even after he lost the Best Supporting Actor Oscar to Red Buttons, Sessue Hayakawa still considered his role as the Japanese prison camp commander to be the highlight of his career.
