Early History
The band recognized universally as "The Breeders" formed in 1988, as an outlet for songs written by Pixies bassist Kim Deal after her regular band's Surfer Rosa album. The band sent out a demo tape which caught the attention of British independent label 4AD, and recorded their first album - 1990s Pod in a single week. The record was produced by Steve Albini, who had worked already with The Pixies.
Commercial Success
After the success of Pod, Deal continued writing songs for The Breeders and recruited her sister Kelley Deal (with whom she had played in the original folk duo called The Breeders) to join the band. After releasing the Safari EP in 1991, original member Tanya Donelly left the band to start Belly. In 1992, the band toured Europe, opening for Nirvana.
The band released their second full-length, Last Splash, in 1993, shortly after the breakup of The Pixies. It became a massive international success, largely because of the popularity of first single "Cannonball." The band toured that summer with the Lollapalooza festival.
Break-Up and Reformation
After Kelley Deal, who had struggled for years with substance abuse, was arrested in 1995 as part of a drug bust and left the band, Kim Deal abandoned The Breeders to start a new band, The Amps.
The sisters reunited in 2002 to record their third album, Title TK and to appear in an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The band, which now includes drummer Jose Medeles, will release its first album in 6 years, Mountain Battles, in 2008.
