The Boondocks is an animated television series produced for Cartoon Network's Adult Swim and is based on the Aaron McGruder comic strip of the same name.
Synopsis
The Boondocks focuses on the Freeman family, an African-American family who have moved from the South Side of Chicago to the suburb of Woodcrest. The family consists of ten-year old Huey, his younger brother Riley and their grandfather Robert. Huey is a radical Afrocentric intellectual and serves as the show's voice of reason as it satirizes popular culture and race in America. Riley is his counterpart, ready and willing to be part of hip-hop culture. http://www.complex.com/CELEBRITIES/Complex-Men/Aaron-McGruder
The show has met with some controversy, but has largely been praised by critics. Its visual aesthetic is partly influenced by McGruder's own love of anime, and its fight sequences are inspired by Japanese animation (like Samurai Champloo) and classic Kung Fu films.
Origins of The Boondocks
The Boondocks began life as a comic strip in the student newspaper of Aaron McGruder's alma mater, the University of Maryland, College Park. The strip was later included in The Source magazine and was eventually syndicated to newspapers nationwide.
