The Boomtown Rats

  • The Boomtown Rats were an Irish punk, rock and new wave band led by enigmatic frontman Bob Geldof. The band split shortly after a performance at 1985's Live Aid, which Geldof organized. Ever since, Geldof has been known primarily as an activist against world hunger, rather than a musician, but the Boomtown Rats were one of the most eclectic bands of their era. The band's six albums combined punk-rock drive, '60s R&B;, Beatles-influenced chamber-pop, ska, new wave, and Caribbean music, as well as the influence of Bruce Springsteen, and Bob Dylan. The results earned the Rats critical acclaim, as well as nine straight Top 40 hit singles in the UK.
