The Beatles' Hey Jude was released on August 26, 1968 as a single on the band's label Apple Records. Written and sung by Paul McCartney, the ballad was written to comfort Julian Lennon during his parent's, John and Cynthia Lennon, divorce. It spent nine weeks at number one in the U.S.
