  • Critical Reception

"In place of a dramatic arc, Edel's movie offers a long, drawn-out anti-climax: a shapeless rag-bag of violent events. This, arguably, imitates the frustrating messiness of real life, but the movie declines to dig deep into the terrorists' cult identity and group dynamic. There are plenty of suspect devices and home-made bombs duct-taped to alarm clocks here, but we never find out what makes their creators tick."The Guardian: The Baader Meinhof Complex Review (November 14, 2008)

"There is a real problem with a film that, although thoroughly researched and directed with integrity, struggles to move the audience. If we can’t connect with Meinhof, Baader and Ensslin, the three RAF members who are given a substantial back story, how can we care about the numerous interchangeable later members who take centre stage once the key players have been imprisoned?"Times Online: The Baader Meinhof Complex Review (November 13, 2008)

"Does this (film) glamorise terrorism? I think not, though it skates fairly near the edge at times. What it certainly does is remind us that understandable causes are sometimes driven into impotence and thus pushed towards an escalating violence that those who espouse them never imagined. That’s why this impressively mounted and thoroughly researched film is so watchable, whatever one’s views about its fanatical participants. This is London: Terror and Glamour in The Baader Meinhof Complex (November 13, 2008)
