The Alamo

The 1960 film version of The Alamo marked John Wayne's first time behind the camera, and the movie was given a Best Picture Oscar nod for his efforts. The film depicted the events that took place in 1836 at the Battle of the Alamo, where valiant Texan troops unsuccessfully defended the famous fort against Santa Ana's Mexican army.

Double Duty

In addition to his directorial duties, "the Duke" played one of his most recognizable roles in the legendary Davy Crockett, a part that was later played by Billy Bob Thornton in the 2004 remake.
