The 1951 film classic The African Queen stars Humphrey Bogart as Charlie Allnut, the uncouth captain of a supplies boat (the "African Queen"), and Katharine Hepburn as conservative missionary Rose Sayer who has come to East Africa during a tumultuous period of World War I.
The two are soon forced to take the Queen down the river together to evade German troops, and an unlikely romance ensues. Both Bogart and Hepburn were nominated for Academy Awards for The African Queen, as was director John Huston. Bogart was the only one who took home the statue, though—it was his first and only Oscar win.
