The Advocate is the longest running gay, lesbian and transgender related news magazine in America.
History
Established 1967, The Advocate is the oldest gay, lesbian and transgender related news magazine in the United States. Originally called The Los Angeles Advocate, the first issue was a 12-page newspaper laid out with a typewriter. In 1969, the name was changed to The Advocate and it began to be distributed nationally.
An investment banker named David Goodstein bought The Advocate in 1974 changing it from a newspaper to a magazine. The magazine is currently published by Liberation Publications Inc. and has been since Goodstein's death in 1985.
