History
Established 1967, The Advocate is the oldest gay, lesbian and transgender related news magazine in the United States. Originally called The Los Angeles Advocate, the first issue was a 12-page newspaper laid out with a typewriter. In 1969, the name was changed to The Advocate and it began to be distributed nationally.An investment banker named David Goodstein bought The Advocate in 1974 changing it from a newspaper to a magazine. The magazine is currently published by Liberation Publications Inc. and has been since Goodstein's death in 1985.
