The 4400

In the first episode of The 4400, 4,400 people who have gone missing since 1946 reappear at the same moment on Highland Beach near Mount Rainier, Washington. They are all exactly the same age as they were when they were abducted, and none is aware that any time has passed. The show follows the lives of the returnees and the efforts of government officials to find out what has happened to them.

Special Abilities

As the show progresses, many of the abductees are shown to have special abilities, or powers. The Department of Homeland Security is concerned that some may be a threat to society, and dispatches two agents, Tom Baldwin (Joel Gretsch) and Diana Skouris (Jacqueline McKenzie) to keep an eye on them.

Derivative?

Some viewers argued that The 4400 shared much in common with the Steven Spielberg miniseries Taken - including one of its lead acters, Joel Gretsch. Also, the team of Baldwin and Skouris bore striking similarity to the team of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully on The X Files.

Unexpected Cancellation

Due to sagging ratings and the Writer's Guild of America strike USA decided to cancel The 4400, as well as The Dead Zone, in late 2007. Frustrated fans have mounted a campaign to bring back the show, which was canceled without the opportunity to wrap up dangling plotlines, but have so far been unsuccesful.

Who's That Guy?

Much like many other science fiction and fantasy TV shows, The 4400 is filmed in Vancouver. Many actors on the show have appeared in other genre TV shows, and if you watch more than one, you may see some familiar faces. The 4400 cast members who've appeared in other genre shows include:

  1. Kavan Smith (Stargate Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica)
  2. Samantha Ferris (Supernatural, Battlestar Galactica, Stargate SG-1)
  3. Richard Kahan (Smallville, Supernatural, Stargate Atlantis)
  4. Chad Faust (Smallville)
  5. Joel Gretsch (Taken)
  6. Summer Glau (Firefly, Angel, The Sarah Connor Chronicles)
