Fun With Thanksgiving Math

Have children list their favorite Thanksgiving foods. Once the list is made, provide information on current prices for the foods, including turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Many times this information can be gleaned from newspaper circulars. Give students "play" money with a set budget and have them try to purchase Thanksgiving dinner for 10 or even 12 people without going over their budgets.

Have kids try to calculate how many pounds of turkey they will need per person for Thanksgiving dinner. They could also try to determine how long the turkey will need to be cooked, based on its size.

In keeping with the turkey cooking theme, why not have children graph turkey consumption? To do this, gather information about how much turkey people typically eat during the Thanksgiving holiday. Have children graph the amount, and analyze the results.

For younger children, counting turkey feathers is a great way to brush up on basic addition and subtraction skills. Cut out a body of a turkey along with at least 15 feathers. Use velcro to attach and remove feathers from the turkey, asking the kids to tell you how many are left or how many were added.
