Rangers in Kenya have started a pilot program where a small number of elephants are equipped with collars containing cell phone SIM cards. When the elephants get near a populated area, the collars automatically text rangers. This allows rangers to intercept elephants before they get near enough towns to damage crops or injure people, and reduces the harm done to people's livelihoods and the elephants themselves.
