  • History

The basketball team at Texas Tech was formed in 1925, just two years after the university was founded. Between 1961 and 1996, the Red Raiders won six Southwest Conference regular season champions. From 1976 to 1996, the team won five conference tournament championships. They have also been to the Sweet Sixteen five times in school history.

In 2001, Bob Knight was hired as head coach of the men's basketball team. Knight coached the team until 2008, leading the Red Raiders to three NCAA Tournament appearances and one NIT appearance. Knight averaged 21 wins per season in six years at Texas Tech. He also won his 880th game at Texas Tech, making him men's college basketball's winningest coach. Pat Knight took over for Bob Knight in 2008.
