The bowl, originally called the Houston Bowl was first played in 2002, with the Oklahoma State Cowboys defeating the Southern Miss Golden Eagles 33 to 23. The first Texas Bowl was played on December 28, 2006, and featured Rutgers from the Big East defeating the Kansas State from the Big 12 by a score of 37 to 10.
