Film Career
Garr's first major film role was as Inga in Mel Brooks's 1974 comedy Young Frankenstein. In 1977, she played the frazzled wife of Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) in Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind. In 1982, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the gender-bending comedy Tootsie. -
Brief Biography
Garr was born into a show business family: Her father, Eddie Garr, was an actor, and her mother, Phyllis Garr, was a dancer. Teri Garr began her film career as a dancer, appearing in several Elvis Presley vehicles, including Viva Las Vegas. -
Overcoming the Odds
In 1999, Garr was officially diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and found that many people in Hollywood were hesitant to work with her because of her disability.Los Angeles Times: Teri Garr is back on her feet... (June 30, 2008) In December of 2006, she suffered a near-fatal brain aneurysm, from which she recovered after extensive rehabilitative therapy. Shortly before the aneurysm, Garr completed two independent films, Kabloey and Expired, both of which were released in the summer of 2008. -
