Tent City

Tent City is the nickname of a homeless encampment of tents in Sacramento, California, where about 150 homeless people live. On March 25, 2009, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said that he would assist city officials to relocate the homeless people currently living in Tent City.Fox News: Sacramento OKs Plan to Close 'Tent City' (March 26, 2009)

Other Tent Cities

There have been several news reports of similar tent cities in California and other states. In California, tent cities have previously been reported in Fresno and San Diego. Reports of tent cities have also surfaced in the cities of Portland, Oregon, Seattle, Washington, and Columbus, Ohio.msnbc: Tent cities rise across the country (September 18, 2008) During The Great Depression, tent cities were common in several U.S. cities and were nicknamed "Hooverville" because some blamed President J. Edgar Hoover for the depression.
