Coaching Change
On November 5, 2008, head coach Phillip Fulmer announced that he would step down at the end of the season. On November 21, 1891, the University of Tennessee played their first football game. The Volunteers earned their first win the following year, on October 15, 1892, against Maryville College.Neyland Years
In 1926, Robert Neyland was hired to coach the team. He continued to coach for a total of 21 seasons, missing a few years twice after being called up to serve in the U.S. military.Championship Beginnings
Neyland led the Vols to their first bowl game, which they won in 1931. In 1938, the Vols played in the Orange Bowl, which they won and went on to win the national championship the same year. These were the first championships for Tennessee.Manning Years
