Early Years
The team was originally founded in 1960 as the Houston Oilers, part of the American Football League. They won the AFL championships their first two years in the league, in 1960 and 1961.Entering the NFL
Following the NFL-AFL merger in 1970, the Oilers did not return to the post season again until they reached and lost the AFC Championship Game to the Pittsburgh Steelers in consecutive years: 1978 and 1979.Move to Tennessee
Shortly after the 1995 season, it was announced that the team would be moving to Nashville, Tennessee starting in the 1998 season. The team actually made the move in 1997, where they were named the Tennessee Oilers. They played their home games at Vanderbilt University until their own stadium was completed. On December 22, 1999, right after their new stadium, LP Field, was opened, the team was renamed the Tennessee Titans. The Titans made their only Super Bowl appearance also in 1999. They lost Super Bowl XXXIV to the St. Louis Rams.Notable Titans Players/Alumni
