A television set is used to watch video broadcasts of programming. Commercially available to the general public since the 1930s, television replaced the radio as the main in-home form of entertainment for people around the world. Television sets are not only used to watch programming made available from terrestrial networks, otherwise known as over-the-air, and cable broadcasting outlets, but also are used to watch pre-recorded content through video tape recording playback machines and digital video disc players.

Television sets were a black-and-white proposition until the 1970s when color sets became all the rage. Back then, it was only the affluent who could afford more than one television set in a household. In the next step in television evolution, television sets became merely a part of a home entertainment system which includes, in many cases, state-of-the-art video and audio equipment.
Television Today
Television has come a long way. From black and white to color... from cathode ray tubes to plasma and LCD TVs and analog signals to high definition television, as technology has advanced, so have our choices and the quality of the television signals we receive. Today's television is a far cry from those first grainy signals, and now some families even have entire rooms in their houses devoted to their home theater systems.
